Bryant enters the spring as the starter, but Lawrence will get a long look

There won’t be as many position battles this spring as there have been in the past because Clemson returns 15 starters from the team that made the College Football Playoff last season. One of those returning starters is quarterback Kelly Bryant, who will start and probably end the spring as the number one signal caller. All eyes, however, will be on the kid with the rocket arm and flowing locks. Full Story »

We will have a spring game no doubt about it, and what happens will happen. But bet the farm that no freshman rookie QB will be named as a starter going on the road to Texas A&M the second game of the season!!!

Then look for A&M to crowd the line of scrimmage just like Bama did. Game over.

So you think aTm has the level of athlete of defense to pull this off? How did it work out against the coots or Miami?

Lmao. Yep KB didn't beat a team near the level of A&M last year. ;)

Baloney. Every other team tried that and failed miserably (save Syracuse). Comparing ATM to 'Bama is ridiculous. Like comparing the Coots to Clemson.

I surly agree that comparing A&M to Bama is a very bad comparison, but comparing Clemson with the coots is an insult;)!!!

I agree. HJ has looked pretty good to me every time I've seen him (which wasn't too often as we all know). Even in the Spring Game, he was put on the team with the worst OL, his center made a couple of bad snaps that threw him off, yet I felt he made good decisions. Add in what we saw in limited game action and you could tell he improved. I have a feeling that HJ will be a good QB. Whether that's at Clemson or not, I don't know. But for right now, the competition will only help all the guys get better. Not a bad problem to have. Oh, and the things I've heard about Brice? Man!!!

I think that maybe the coaches kept Hunter's talents in a shadow last year, and that's why we never saw him in a game long enough to get settled in.

@dhood when do you think the question will be asked, are we going to run KB2’s offense from 2017 or go back to a more downfield passing QB and feature these wonderful backs we have similar to what we ran the last half of 2016 season to get our balance. Tia.

What are you talking about. KB lead the ACC in down field passing and was one of the best in the nation. Look it up

That is true and I love KB but against superior defenses like Alabama he struggled to throw downfield. All the WRs numbers went down this year bc our passing game was not as good as past with DW. With all the talent we have at WR we need to be able to sling the ball around. Not saying KB can't improve and do this but he needs to improve his passing game imo if he wants to stay the starter. Our offense is so much more dangerous if we can sling the ball around. We have 5 stars on deck at WR and with the thunder lighting duo at rb we can really spread teams out and throw the ball amd still run like we did when DW and Gallman were here. Love KB but if he can't improve his passing then we need to start the qb that gives us the best chance to do this. Only time will tell Go Tigers!!!

KB is simply not a deep passing threat. End of story. Hopefully we learned something from the Alabama game.

I don’t think it’s that he’s not a deep threat more than it is he has no pocket awareness and isn’t able to buy himself extra time to let those longer routes develop

Against a team like Alabama you have to be able to feel pressure and step up in the pocket to buy more time. Kelly doesn’t do that. If the pressure is closing in he always goes backwards. Then the defense collapses on him

Love KB but I agree with this. He can improve tho. I am sure he has been watching film and I would think the coaches have told him to work on pocket presence.

Re: New Story: Bryant enters the spring as the starter, but Lawrence will get a long look

Posted: Feb 11, 2018 1:14 PM

I have mentioned the same about how KB fails when it comes to him buying himself time. And when he tries to buy himself some time, he don't know where to go with the ball. I've always believed that once a play breaks down bc the D has broke through, once the QB has to scramble to make something happen, he is suppose to just look for the closest open man and put the ball in his hands, but for what ever the reason KB don't see anybody....

Hard to throw deep when your running for your life. Give KB Wayne Gallman, Mike Williams and Jordan Leggett and I'd be willing to bet the outcome is different.

He had to pass interferences that was not called one for a td the other was a pick 6. How many drops and the online got whipped. Oh but it’s all on KB ??? You know he didn’t have the receivers that Wastin had and was still one of the best in the country

Re: New Story: Bryant enters the spring as the starter, but Lawrence will get a long look

Posted: Feb 10, 2018 6:03 PM

The O line got beat up many times, but DW4 bought his own time to get the play off. There was many dropped balls, and DW4 would throw it to someone he was sure would catch it the next time. DW4 would always, always give the ball to who was clicking in that game. Excuses won't cover for an inaccurate arm. With the receivers we have, just get it there, they will catch it!!! KB does not have the ability to throw the ball in tight windows the way DW4 did. HJ and TL do have that ability!!! What was and is so special about DW4, is his ability to go to the next play without letting the play before affect him with his next play just seconds after a bad play!!!

Against a good defense, KB don't look to his 2nd or 3d option if the 1st is covered, he will take off, jet, leave, run into a wall. Don't get mad at me for being honest bc, we all know that it's the truth. My opinion is to let the best man have the job regardless of who that is. IDK who the best one is, just give those guys playing the game the best QB we have on the move, and more importantly, the one with the best arm bc we have a couple of Good RBs that can run the ball when needed!!!!

Yeah he had a great total season but when the lights were the brightest he couldn’t complete a downfield throw. Alabama baring something crazy will be in the playoff again. To beat them you have to throw the ball well and down field. Don’t do that and you will lose like we did. There have to be changes this year if they want to win another NC. If Kelly wins the job because he busts his ### and has learned to throw the ball better down field then I have no problem with him starting.

Receivers have to catch the ball when lights are brightest

KB put the ball up the same way Deshaun did the previous year.

Mike Williams and Jordan Leggett made the amazing and critical catches for Deshaun.

Receivers did not make the amazing and critical catches for Bryant.

Very true, but KB struggled a good bit after the first 5

games with downfield accuracy. Some of that could have been the ankle injury, but the NC State game is a good example where his launch point created multiple jump ball situations where the ball was way under thrown. Same thing in the FSU game and a couple others.

He looked better against SCAR and Miami. The Alabama game was a combination of more drops by Cain and holding the ball too long. If there was one element of KB's game that was a issue all season, it was holding the ball too long. Hopefully, last year's experience
will help him next season with that internal clock to decide there is nothing there, I need to take off running or throw the ball away.

He must be so glad that Francois ended up injured very first game of the season last year and that whomever came up with the nice one stat didn't look at Lamar Jackson being 15th in the nation in passing yards and 17th in the nation for passing TD's, while KB was 46th in PY and 86th in passing TD's. As a matter of fact, I believe John Wolford of WF, 24 Kurt Benkert of Virginia, Ryan Finley of NC St, Josh Jackson of VT and Malik Rosier of Miami all sit above fellow ACC QB KB in both stats.

Too bad that scenario likely won't exist this next year. Hope the coaches don't expect FSU to have the abnormal bad season they did last year. Anyone else recall the last time we've seen their season go that way? Can't say any of us have a clue what they'll look like in 2018 with Taggart. I'd hold of though on crowning KB like he's the best choice next year... Because he just might not be. #ALLIN

Re: New Story: Bryant enters the spring as the starter, but Lawrence will get a long look

Posted: Feb 12, 2018 10:59 AM

I think that's a misleading statistic. How many times did we throw short and the WR turned it into a "long" play. I can remember several seven yard curl routes to Cain that he turned into a 60-70 yard TD. If you look at the advanced stats of balls thrown over 30 yards it tells a much different story.

HARD TO BELIEVE A GUY THAT WAS A FIRST YEAR STARTER THAT LEAD HIS TEAM TO THE COLLEGE PLAYOFFS AND WON 12 GAMES COULD BE SUCH A WHIPPING BOY TO SOME OF YOU GOOBERS. MAYBE, JUST MAYBE KELLY WILL CONTINUE TO WORK HIS BUTTOCKS OFF TO IMPROVE HIS GAME. IF IT AINT GOOD ENOUGH I TRUST THE COACHES TO MAKE THAT CALL. Hood says TL will get a long look. Great. HJ sure as #### did not get a long look nor was he developed despite coming in Jan 2017. I am all in on Clemson and always will be, but this kid never got a shot at any real P.T. despite being ranked at camps higher than Jake Fromm and Tua. Nor does it appear he will get a shot in 2018. As for those Tiger fans and alums who moaned about Tiger O-Line play versus Bama, it was rough, but we had more All-ACC O-linemen than we've had in decades. (As a reference point, the Houston Texans averaged 21 more pts a game with Watson than with Savage. With the same O-Line. The QB position skill set level matters. And as defensive ability grows, it's more and more about the QB position and his ability to make all the throws that establishes the Defense's ability to stack the line and blitz. This is basic.)

As for the upcoming season, I hope to see TL take the job asap - in Spring or Summer camp if possible. Why run a charade? IMHO Tigers go undefeated in regular season with any and all of QB's on roster. As has been well documented on T-Net and Clemson circles, it's all about which QB gives the Tigers the best chance to win the conf. championship and playoff games. The returning Clemson talent is unparalleled in Clemson history. But in the end, while QB position will get all the publicity, it's really about the team. The team. Real simply which QB gives the team the most 2018 playoff potential? Sorry to rile the PC crowd, but it's TL or HJ.

As for HJ, it's likely transfer time to a top school. I will pull for him wherever he transfers and wish him the best.

knowing it will get some flames ... but it's all good. There's starting 22 players plus special teams, and the QB position will be the most influential in determining the season outcome. All the players deserve a championship if they work hard in 2018. The D-Line is ungodly and would love to see Tee Higgins, Amari, Renfrow and the other WR talent get a shot to show their skill sets. Also, it would be amazing to unclog the scrimmage for ETN and Feater.

While I am glad this is a ‘problem’ for our Tigers, and even more glad HCDS & Co are the guys making the final call, I agree it has been a difficult situation, and is going to be a challenge!

But I do accept this as your opinion - and am sure a few more will be voiced. Just don’t get the point (nor do you, pun intended ??) of someone TD’ing your opinion...

Imo you started off showing some football intuition, but quickly concluded with your desired outcome. So here's mine,

Kelly starts the season with HJ a close 1A starter....HJ gets a ton of good playing time and takes over at starter in 2019. You can insert Chase and take out HJ in this scenario. Trevor gets a red shirt and challenge in 2019 as a red shirt freshman, HJ as true junior, Chase as red shirt sophomore...someone will transfer out before 2019 opener. Win for players and program.

red shirting at Clemson or hanging around without playing. Dabo and staff have done one he11uva job recruiting, and Bama schooled one of our most talented teams (less QB) in playoff game. Old news. But IMHO you don't keep Deshaun Watson and Carson Wentz on the pine to play Tyrod Taylor. No matter how good a guy Tyrod is or how hard he works. It hurts the rest of the talented team, and waters down WR and RB talent.

True but HJ and Tyrod Taylor shouldn't be mentioned in the same thread. It won't hurt TL to sit a year or two. HJ is capable of leaving early just like DW and accomplishing just as much if not more.

Seriously Man are you blind? KB couldn't even break the 3k mark passing and was terribly inconsistent on throws from 0-15 yards. Why do you think 70% of our passes were either behind the LOS, a deep go, or a quick 5 yard out or curl? BC he is a terrible thrower of the football!!! You can blame whoever you want but Kelly Bryant is not a thrower of the football and Trevor Lawrence is. Its amazing to me how many of you guys think Kelly Bryant is a better QB then Trevor, you clearly havent seen Trevor play yet. He would have started for Clemson last year. KB was the best QB we had in 2017 and it wasn't close.

That being said, KB is probably playing pretty close to his ceiling, while Hunter Johnson is just getting started. HJ made a lot of freshman mistakes, which is why he never got the start, despite the raw talent.

A year of experience and maturity can make a world of difference.

These types of comments is ludicrous! Before last year season all we heard was what KB couldn't do! Who should be starting at QB other than KB. All last season, all he done was take the Tigers back to the playoffs and put on the stat sheet numbers that was pretty close to DW4 percentage wise. And still, and still people like yourself (SO CALL TIGER FANS) gripe about the same old narrative. I would suggest you watch last season film that would Out Right debunk your so call narrative but I won't do that because it's obvious the blinders are on and the only thing you would like to see is that KB is not behind the center no matter what! Coach DS made it clear before last season that there was a QB battle and the best man would take the reigns. The team made it known, and confirm the coaches decissions why KB was the QB leading the Tigers. And still, and still, some didn't buy in! We need fans to held to the same Standard as the players, coaches and administrators that is "The Best." And to be ALL IN even when the person You think should be starting is not! So Call Fans who think they know the game, don't care if they send out negative remarks against our players but yet expect positive results. No! If you All IIN be All IN if not get ALL OUT! Let the coaches run the process to get THE BEST player out on the field. I do realize many of you don't know what the process is, let alone understand it! If you expect our players to be held to THE STANDARD, hold yourself to THE SAME STANDARD! Your opinion don't win games!! I'm pulling for all our Tigers and ALL IN with whomever takes the field first! We got that type of team! Go Tigers!

You make some great points on loyalty and "All In". Interesting you have been a T-Net member since 2016 and this is your 11th post. Possibly you are a player which makes your remarks even more credible. DW was special; my favorite all time Clemson player for his guts and his poise. After DW a drop-off was inevitable. Wilkins, Ferrell, Dex and the D are also all-time greats paralleling the Perry bros and 1980-83 Ford D-Line. Perhaps even better. Recruiting is amazing. To your point last year, the Offense was shaped, curtailed and limited to KB's strengths as it should have been. KB was not 1st team All ACC, not 2nd team, not 3rd, not Honorable Mention. Much of the team was all-conference. The team won because of overall talent. 22 players. Not one QB. Best wishes to KB and all players. I understand finite element models and aeropropulsion and also my opinion does not win games. Player talent and development wins games. So coach them up and may the best man play.

KB2 did what he needed to do.

Not only did we lose DW4, we also lost Williams, Scott, Leggett, and Gallman's blocking in the backfield. (Etienne and Feaster were equally awful at pass protection.) That's going to impact the passing game. Staff did a great job in adapting the offense to what we had instead of what we wished we had.

KB is one of the best zone read QBs in the country, he moves well, makes good decisions, and is accurate at short range (See the 1st Renfrow TD against SCar that the threw on the run between 4 Gamecock defenders.) Big concern is lack of arm strength on the deep ball.

We have guys who can throw the deep ball better, but do their other abilities match up? The coaches know more about this than I do.

As of the day that TL arrived on campus with Dabo talking that he is farther along coming than DW4 was when he came in. I think that talk like that has put transfer in the minds of HJ or Brice. I will be willing to bet that if KB is the starter through this coming season, one or both will announce they are transferring out. Both of those QBs are to talented to be waiting behind KB and then in comes TL. One of and maybe both HJ or Brice will be gone gone gone. Personally, I don't think either of them will watch their chances to play in the NFL evaporate sitting behind KB and TL. One of those guys could back up TL and show no let down when they are in the game and have a chance for the NFL, but not so for both of them. There has been times when a college back up QB makes it to the NFL the same year as the starter!!!

Great post, and I agree with most of what you said. Whether HJ or TL this is the year to allow a young guy to "learn on the job". I'm not paid to coach and they're gonna make the decisions they believe are best for the team, but from an outside perspective why do you not go with HJ or TL (assuming one of them shows out in the spring)? This is a rare opportunity with the defense we have coming back (at least on paper), and what appears to be a very favorable schedule. Things are hardly ever going to line up this nicely.

KB served us well last season, and he was probably the right choice at the time. If HJ gets in there maybe he's the better QB by the end of the season, but do we lose 1 or 2 more games thus eliminating us from the playoffs? Who knows?

So anyway, love KB but unless he improves significantly in his passing game and decision making I fear we're one and done in the playoffs again, especially if we play our new annual playoff rival in the first game.

Remember ..Watson was not even named the starter coming out of spring . Who knows how KB will respond . He may bust his butt this off season and spring and develop into a better passer . How deadly would that be . I would not count Johnson out either . I am exited that TL chose Clemson but he has not shown anything at the d1 level yet . Let's just see how spring unfolds before we crown him .

Re: Respect all the posts ... and opinions

Absolutely, and the team should never have to settle for second best, the best should play regardless of how many days they have been with the team. Maybe it would be a good idea for Dabo to bring in every player that plays on 1st and 2nd team and just ask them who do they believe would be the absolutely the best QB to lead their team to victory. Listen at their reasons, Dabo will have the finale say no matter what anybody says, even with the other coaches... But I believe those players know who would give them their best chance to win bc their only concern is about winning, the fun is in the winning!!! Even if they were wrong or right, I would like to hear what they had to say. I know I wouldn't vote for my friend if I didn't believe he was the best on my team, and if he ask me who I voted for, I would be honest with him bc that is what a friend is suppose to be, completely honest with each other!!!

Know he's a winner from GA high school and seems to be a leader based on Clemson coaches - for now looks like Brice will have to work hard with the rest of the QB's and wait his turn.

Re: Heard a lot of good things on Brice

Posted: Feb 10, 2018 11:26 AM

Ok let's be honest. The job is KB's to lose. For the rest, they have to take it away from him. HJ & Brice have had a year in the system, so for now they are ahead of TL who has yet to take a snap in a Clemson practice. None of us see practice, so none of us see what coaches see. For TL, it will depend on how fast he can learn the playbook and adjust to the college game. HJ needs to step up his game. I don't know what his shortcomings were , but then I am not his coach. CB needs to do the same. If TL only stays 3 years, then CB will be a senior with four years in the system after TL leaves, and KB and HJ will be gone also.

The one most likely to transfer will be HJ in my opinion. But that is a guess.

Best man win - whoever it is.

Re: New Story: Bryant enters the spring as the starter, but Lawrence will get a long look

Posted: Feb 11, 2018 2:18 PM

So was HJ, but his playing time last year was very brief for what ever reason. IMO, I don't think the coaches wanted us to see just how good he was bc they didn't want to hear the chanting of HJ HJ HJ. And it don't look good for anybody when fans will do that. As long as KB was winning games, the possibility of Dabo changing QBs mid season wasn't going to happen. If KB would have come unglued, Dabo would have thrown HJ in there in a heart beat. He maybe loyal towards his most senior players but, he won't sit there and watch them make him look bad!!!

a clue. This is basically the way it always is. Last year's starter always comes in as the starter the following spring. All other QBs will have a chance to compete and all will be evaluated. When spring practice is over, there probably won't be a lot of surprises, and coaches will be non-committal about many things.

It will probably be something like: "Kelly Bryant had a great spring. He has been here 3 years and led us to the playoff last year. He is still our most complete QB, best able to run this offense and lead this team. If I had to name a starter today, it would probably be Kelly Byant, hands down. TL still has a bit of a learning curve, and that was obvious this spring, but his talent is also obvious. He really jumps out at you. He's a special player and he's gonna be a great one. He makes all of the throws and has a very calm, focused demeanor about him. Hunter had a great spring as well. He really put in the work and his growth has been tremendous and it really shows on the field. I'm really, really proud of how far he has come. He looks like he could take over and lead this team right now. And then there's Chase Brice, and he's just amazing. People may overlook him, but we recruited him for a reason; he's a baller, he can play, and that was very obvious this spring. We are in great shape at QB, still some work to do, but I like what I saw, and I'm confident we've got 4 guys we can win with. Looking forward to continuing this competition into the fall."

Or something like that. There will be no "We're moving on from the Kelly Bryant era; this is now Trevor Lawrence's team", or "I'm going to go ahead and name Hunter Johnson starter for the season; we probably should have done that last year".

Our QB coach is no amateur. Some said that about Coach Swinney. If Kelly Bryant would have been throwing to Mike Williams and Jordan Leggett instead of Deon Cain we probably beat Alabama. If I had a say I would give the ball to Kelly and let him go. Run him with no fear and if he does what I think he will do he could win the Heisman. If he gets hurt have one of those other guys ready.

KB is on the weak side throwing the ball down field. That's part of the reason we have so many designed runs for him and we throw it underneath all of the time. That doesn't mean he won't be our best option this next season though. I hope somebody beats him out though, because that player will be pretty darn good and will increase our chances to win it all if they are better. If our coaches decide that KB is our best option than I support that completely. I am guessing that KB is beat out or splitting time by game 4 though. With all of the talent we have it isn't that crazy to predict. It will be the best for or WR's too.

IMHO, QB Needs To Throw REALLY Well And Run "Good Enough"

Posted: Feb 10, 2018 12:07 PM

After all, the vast bulk of the running chores should be handled by the "Running Backs". The QB should run only when he has to ... ie the pcoket collapses or to "extend the play". Therefore, I hope the QB that starts is the one that demonstrates the highest skill in passing AND the ability to use his legs "to get out of trouble".

in the Spring, that is the only way I see even a possibility of a redshirt. If he competes and looks good . . no way. I hate to say it, but i don't think Trevor Lawrence will be ready next year. I do believe though that if KB misses significant time or has a major injury next year, Hunter Johnson will be the QB from that point on in the season. I like the fact that we have such a wealth of riches at QB, but i really feel that Hunter Johnson will be the QB that gets us to the promise land next year.

Just my two cents.

last years performance against Syracuse and Bama was the worst offensive performance in years. KB brings nothing to our offense. Nothing. The bowl game went exactly as I expected. The worst part was seeing Dabo not even consider making a change at QB. Turned off the game in the third quarter and haven't watched it since.

But this is a classic situation in which NO ONE on T-Net is in a position to have any idea who the starter should be, but based on star ratings, journalistic hype and very limited game/scrimmage film will try and aggressively assert a strong opinion about which QB should start.

Got to disagree with you on some of the stuff you said. Saban was a getting his ars handed to him and he made a gutsy call to bring tua in the game and they won a nc because of it.

Most would say he got lucky and it worked out but that’s not the truth. Saban made sure throughout the season to get tua ready. Played meaningful snaps throughout the season and got plenty of reps with the ones during practice.

That’s something we didn’t do last year and we really couldn’t because kB wasn’t putting a she teams away in the first half.

Agree.

And, with the amount of discussion (and disagreement) caused with last year’s QB battle, adding Trevor Lawrence to the mix certainly wasn’t going to make that go away (...and forgive me for being repetitive, but having FOUR ‘studs’ to pick from for our QB is absoeffinglutely awesome for us!!)!! But, do you think David was just ‘reporting’; or was he perhaps maybe trying to rattle our cages a wee bit? Either way, with 100+ comments and almost 7,000 views (noting too, that your comment got a lot of that reaction), tnet (and David) are well ‘into’ the 2018/19 football season, eh?

The cherry on the sundae this year is our bball team is making noise, and we haven’t played our first baseball game - with a potential for a good showing on the diamond this year, as well. As for me, while I love all things Clemson, football is still king.

Clearly Clemson changed its offense to accommodate KB's strengths and hide his weaknesses. Dabo and the staff have talked about the offense being Clemson's offense after Coach Morris left. From the time Coach Morris started through the 2016 season, our offense was an up tempo spread which exploited individual matchups utilizing the talent and speed at wide receiver. This past season, we largely abandoned the up tempo aspect of our offense, and we chose to play ball control, try to get a lead, and then let our great defense take over. Alabama had 5 weeks to prepare for our offense, and their plan was to stop the run, put pressure on KB, and make him try to beat us with his arm. Me, my children and grandchildren all knew this is what they would do, and it seems either that our offensive staff did not think of that, or they knew or did not trust KB to win the game by giving him freedom to throw the ball downfield on first down early in the game.

Our defense is likely to be even better this year, so the question for me if whether we are going to stay a ball control team and rely on our defense, or whether we are going to go back to being an up tempo spread team which utilizes all of its weapons. If we choose not to utilize the full array of the talents of our quarterbacks and receivers, the "wide receiver U" monicker will quickly become a thing of the past, as great wide receivers will stop coming to Clemson. I hope our staff will choose to regain our identity and use a quarterback who can help us do that. The conservative approach can help us beat mediocre teams, but it will net lead to another national championship. I think we all took note of what Alabama had to do on offense to win NC, and I hope our staff took note of it as well.

Great points. It seems to me that KB can make the reads ,( finding single coverage etc. ), but not the throw . All I know is if KB is the starter we will see stacked boxes till he proves he can beat them.

WHAT?? Is Big Dex moving to End?
