I'll ask the dumb question. What's the advantage to be had by using one in the first place? Also, if there is such a huge advantage, then what would stop a team from having an assistant or GA in the locker room or in another location using one, and running back to the sidelines or using a messenger to tell the coaches of their findings?

Here's the rule from the NCAA rule book.

Media communication equipment, including cameras, sound devices, computers and microphones, is prohibited on or above the field, or in or above the team area (Rule 2-31-1).
