uhh... you don't have to be a coot lurker to understand what

Jul 20, 2014, 12:26 AM

the "state championship" means. It should insult your intelligence to even have to address it. Let alone try to justify it or explain it away, as so many now are trying to do. It's the in-state rivalry game. It means everything, that's all. So please just STPHU and quit embarrassing yourselves and me by association.

I watched the chicken necks try to do this for years, and enjoyed every minute of it. It was pitiful, pathetic, and at times, I almost felt sorry for them. The hoops they would jump through to try to convince everyone that getting dominated by their rival wasn't a big deal. Oh, we have bigger fish to fry now, we're in the SEC, those games are more important, beating Clemson isn't on the national radar, we should stop playing them... blah blah blah. Oh, the excuses... we're all banged up by the end of the year... our coaches & players don't care about beating Clemson any more, but it's top priority for them... blah blah blah.

And all you had to do was patiently listen, hear them out, let them prattle on with all that goofy nonsense... tie their own nooses and build the scaffold... and then grin and quietly say - "Scoreboard. We kicked y'alls azzes again." And that was that. They'd all scurry back under whatever rock they lived under and start plotting another laughable excuse. They had BB guns and slingshots, and we had thermonuclear bombs. There simply is no credible response, and only a fool attempts one.

Tired of hearing how bowl games and division championships completely trumps the in-state rivalry. Remember that bowl game that Missouri played in last year? Remember who played for the conference championship in the PAC 12 last year? Yeah, me neither. I don't even remember who the chicken necks played in a bowl last year... I had to google it to remember they played Wisconsin.

But I've had USEC fans give me the "five finger hand gesture" just in the last week. I #### sure haven't forgotten how that game went in November, or the previous four years, and they haven't either.

If your neighbor is banging your wife, it doesn't matter how many escorts you hooked up with in Las Vegas. He's the one smirking at you when he says "Hi" as you're walking down the driveway to get the newspaper every morning. He's the one you have to live with.

So just quit already. No season is successful with a loss to the chicken necks. Never has been, never will be.

We have GOT to beat the Coots this year 6 in a row can not happen

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

True...oh, so true. There are conference and OOC games,

Jul 20, 2014, 5:03 AM

and there's a rivalry game.

Our rivalry with the Chickens is steeped in history...some good, some bad...and most of us at CU back in the 60's and earlier learned that that game was the end-all to each season. Many still believe that way despite changes in the nature of the beast.

We didn't like losing to them back then...still don't...and won't. It's time for this peating business to come to a screeching halt, and I have a hunch it'll end this year!

Re: True...oh, so true. There are conference and OOC games,

Jul 20, 2014, 6:42 AM

I agree to a point. Yes , lossing in a consistent way to that school in the middle of our state is bad ...very , very bad. Nobody wants that game to be a loss in the Palmetto State .
Taking it into consideration that the rivalry has garnered national attention in the last 6 years or so I also feel like it is our must win game every year...but lets not lose sight of the whole enchilada .
Winning every game is important. Nowadays it will be pretty much a death knell to lose just 2 on the schedule if one is hopeful that Clemson will be included in the "4".
No, state championships are great and all but to pretend like it means everything I will not do. Coot mentality hasn't changed regarding this rivalry , they just have a bit to crow about lately. Clemson is still big brother and that cannot be undone by a 1/2 decade of winning our in-state rivalry game.
Go Tigers .

My young Friend, there's a lot of truth in what you post,

Jul 20, 2014, 6:54 AM

and I think you'd find there are many of us older types who learned long ago not to put all our hopes on one game.

We may have been indoctrinated into the rivalry a certain way during our day, but most of that was due to our lack of post-season play in those days.

I despise losing to the Chickens as much as anyone, but I'm not going to bite off my nose to spite my face by saying that losing that one game destroys our season. That attitude comes from my 50 year association with Clemson and understanding the significance of all our games in these times.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

OK, young Friend....I'd agree with you: losing to them does

Jul 20, 2014, 8:23 AM

take a heck of a bite out of the season, but it doesn't completely destroy the season IMO.

I'll agree that we need to rouse the troops this year and get our minds right entering that game.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I agree with both of you.

Jul 20, 2014, 8:31 AM

It is very important no doubt, and we must win this year.

But last season was very successful and so was the one before. Might have lost to the coots but Dabo is building something very special, and if we had beat coots those 2 years and lost in the bowl games the momentum would not be the same.

Jul 20, 2014, 8:45 AM

with the Chickens, but the most scurrilous of all was my senior year when we were heavily favored...and lost.

A lifelong friend from Rock Hill and his date came to DV from Carolina for the game, and I ran my mouth all morning about what we were going to do to the Chickens.

After the game (they won 7-3) to their credit they said nothing. To my discredit I said a whole lot of things...unfit for print. lol

Years later, he and I were discussing that same game, and he said, "I thought you were going to jump off the stadium!"

I laughed and replied, "No, I was going to throw your a-- off the stadium!" lol

Jul 20, 2014, 8:26 PM [ in reply to Re: True...oh, so true. There are conference and OOC games, ]

Perhaps I went a tad overboard... hey, it was very late and I had a major buzz. Regardless, I just can't stand to see Clemson folks breaking a leg to shrug off the rivalry game and diminish it's importance. NOW THAT WE'RE LOSING IT. I can promise you... nobody was saying this back when we were winning it routinely.

It was the ace in the hole that everybody threw down on the table whenever it was needed. And rightfully so. We usually had "braggin' rights" and they didn't. It settled every argument and trumped whatever point they were trying to make. Good lord... we still refer to the overall series record. So we can thump our chest about a game played in 1927, yet blow off the last 5 years?

Besides, as you alluded to, with that game where it is on the schedule... losing it puts all of our other season goals at risk as well. Early season losses can be overcome, but a loss in late Nov is devastating to rankings, bowls, etc. We simply have to start winning this game. Maybe not every year, but at least 50/50.

I may be wrong but our defense will dominate everyone that we play with the exception of FSU. Our offense will be humming come Nov. This is where we look back and it will be defining moment. We have depth at every level and the dandy dozen is gone. This year we play like a complete team with no single headliner but many headliners. The Clemson machine is coming!

And that's exactly what makes this so tough. This is the best stretch of football EVER. But yet we are going on 5 loses in a row, all in double digits, and 3 of those games with against either a backup QB, or a 3rd string rb.
That.... Is what makes it so tough.

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

First of all, it's not 2005. We play 12 games.

Jul 20, 2014, 9:47 PM

Second, winning 10+ games and beating USuC are both obtainable. We haven't even been competitive with them in the past 5 years (looking at you Chad Morris. Your play calling has sucked).

Here's the bottom line; winning 11 games by beating 2 cupcakes, Duke, NC State, Wake, Virginia and other weak ACC teams doesn't do it for me. It's time to start beating USuC, the most important game on the schedule.

It's the most important game to them, and it shows. They dominate.

Well said. I hated losing to y'all and the next time we lose to y'all I will hate and not want to hear anything about how the game wasn't that important. Rivalries are what make college football great. I take some crap on our board for openly admitting I would rather beat Clemson than win the SEC. I know some think that's stupid and I know football is played to win titles. However, if we won the SEC and lost to Clemson I would hate it.

To say that losing to the coots takes away from the last

Jul 20, 2014, 2:02 PM

2 year's success is your opinion and you are welcome to it. I, for one, do not feel like Clemson's success boils down to one game and one game only. Do you remembeer who won the USC/UCLA game or the Ok/Ok St game last year? Me neither and those are in state rivalry games just like ours. So that argument goes both ways. I want to win ALL games but definately rather win the FSU game, than the coot game, if we could only win one.

Re: To say that losing to the coots takes away from the last

Jul 20, 2014, 2:23 PM

I don't think it completely tarnishes our last two years, however, we do look really stupid when try to minimize it. It's very important. It makes our fanbase look pathetic to try and find things we did better than the coots. They have scoreboard and I will try to justify how we're better because we beat Auburn three years ago and they lost to them. Before posting things like that please ask yourself if a reply of "scoreboard" would make you look stupid.
Give the devil his due, and lets change that in November.

Winning the ACC is all that matters in the "big picture" sense. Yes Uga ..Yes Scar ...but those 2 pale in comparison up against the way our season would feel if we didn't beat FsU or any of the other ACC teams in the middle.

BTW I do remember all our Orange Bowl trips. All our conference championships so your socialist take on history just like the Coots in wiping history clean is DUMB.
