Most of you probably don't know that Maryland (and Clemson to some extent) was the reason the ACC was formed. Maryland and Oklahoma were numbers 1 and 2 in 1951. The Southern Conference, in order to de-emphasize football, forbid participation in a bowl game. Maryland was to play Oklahoma (and Clemson to play Miami in the Gator Bowl) which they did. As a result, Maryland and Clemson were penalized in the 1952 season. This resulted I the formation of the ACC.
