HVAC help needed!

Jun 22, 2014, 11:09 AM

My AC at the house quit working yesterday. The fan motor seems to want to engage but doesn't. It is not spinning but makes a loud sound like it wants too. I have been told it could be the fan motor or the run capacitor. Any help would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the Easley area.

Most likely capacitor. Cut power to unit. Remove access

cover to compressor unit. Capacitor is a cylindrical unit ~ 4-6" tall X 2" wide and generally with electrical terminals on top. Inspect visually to determine if it appears swollen or arched, normally on the top. If so, disconnect wires carefully one at a time. It is a capacitor so it may still maintain some charge which can vary. Carefully touch the terminals simultaneously with an insulated screwdriver to confirm discharge. There should be a sticker with the relevant info on the side.

Thanks so much SOLOS. Question is now where do I locate a capacitor around the Greenville area? I don't believe any place is open on a Sunday.

Doubt you will but not my area so can't say. Try a HVAC

supply on Monday. Be sure to have the old one with you. There are critical capacitance numbers that must be met.

Solos is correct.

Try Grainger or Graybar. AC Start Caps are much less expensive. However, you will have to open a commercial account.

I've been wrong two times, but this isn't one of them.

Try C C Dixon or Johnstone Supply in G'ville

on Monday. Pretty sure they will have it and will sell to you.

if your fan isn't turning, it could be your fan motor!

retired electrical engineer so he was able to come help me. Tested the capacitor, but it was fine. Turned out to the be the fan motor. It was pretty much shot and seized up, but we were able to get some oil into it and get it running long enough to get the house cool again. It only lasted like 6 hours, but that was good enough. Replaced the fan motor the next morning.

Fan's motor is locked up.

You can handle that one yourself for a couple hundred bucks.

Make sure to flip the disconnect before you go in there. :)
