Miami fans think they are Alabama now...

Oct 7, 2020, 7:43 PM

They win three games and now they are worse than chicken fans. My God, I hope we blow them out.

I have not missed "The U" arrogance At All!

Oct 7, 2020, 8:06 PM

They have always thought they were ( if you will ) Alabama! Not in terms of being the Crimson Tide themselves - but in terms of being "The Premier CFB Team and that all are just blessed to be on the same field as The U"!
They have that arrogance! Gained during the 90's dominance. Most of their new fans probably view them more like we view Wake Forrest though. It's the old heads still thinking Willis Magahey or Edgeren James or Warren Sapp or Michael Irving or Ed Reed or Ray Lewis are going to be coming out the tunnel.

I love it when they get beat to this day! I think Miami was blessed to have had Jimmy Johnson take over for Schnellenberger who took down and out Miami to the National Championship game. Plenty of talent in that part of the country and teams were not raiding it like it's being raided now.
Who wants to go to Miami though? Most of the kids back in the day were going because the blue bloods at the time wanted big big 10 looking players. Big Nebraska - Nebraska I-Formation types was all the rage. That area had more speed/size combination players and a coach who was not afraid of "the forward pass"! So, yep, they were ahead of the curve. By the time Johnson arrived; it was a destination for those South Florida kids! Everybody wanted to play at "The U"! They got a rep and kids loved it.
I thought Coker did a good job holding it down - but it went down after him!

Suddenly other teams were not just running the football - which Miami had so much speed and size on defense they were shutting down running attacks. And if you got behind in the game; it was over back then. I think what happened was everybody else started taking athletes and putting them in skill positions to get more speed on the field. They also started passing it around the field more and Miami got caught resting on past accomplishments.
They failed to continue to improve and got passed!

A few of their past hires have still not done what Johnson did - establish dominant linemen on both sides. Fast WR's, DB's and RB's can be found by the LB. in South Florida. But without a good line QB's, RB's and WR's never get a chance to make plays! Without dominant DL fast flow LB's and secondary players can only make plays after someone is multiple yards downfield!
I'll admit this - if they ever figure that out and are able to keep kids in South Florida and they get some imagination on offense/defense. They would be basically ( a top tier program ).

As of today, "that does not describe them"!

I had a poster on youtube say their OL is better than ours.

As a Canes fan I will tell you we do not think we are Alabama and pretty much every fan I know thinks we lose. I think we can keep it close but in the end you guys are just better in Coaching, QB and overall depth. Best of luck and hoping for decent weather to see where Miami stacks up.

Well, remember, we are just a small little private university with 5 NC's in the past. Oh, and BTW, we have a huge international airport & you don't need to show your gold teeth to get thru the gate. Does SC have an airport? I don't actually know of anyone who has ever purposely flow to SC - most just drive thru or fly over. Oh, and our players will try their best to give you a decent game Saturday. Hopefully we have an injury-free game on both sides and with few penalties. No, we do not think we are Alabama YET, but if we can keep outsiders from raiding our South FL recruits we could indeed be.

Miami has never had a problem with talent. Even during the lean years Miami has been sending players to the NFL. You all do not have anyone that wants to purposely live near Coral Gables or Miami! Nice play to visit; but nobody wants to live there. That's why I see so many dang Florida tags in South Carolina wandering around aimlessly. Guess those good folks get tired of the pythons, gators and hurricanes knocking they pascal colored house down! J/K man - just a little smack talk - though I really wouldn't want to live in that cesspool.

Miami football under Jimmy Johnson was so good because he built the team from the inside out. Look at the dominant OL and DL during his tenure. There have been some decent DL since then; but my opinion is mostly about the OL and no creativity on the offensive side.
Miami was taking guys and switching them from QB so they had more speed on the field before many people. Miami and Spurrier Florida teams later escorted all the run heavy offenses out of college football. Miami killed you with speed and it started with twitchy DL who got in those run gaps and caused havoc. Then if you threw it they had a ton of speed in the secondary. Ahead of their time really and i.m.o the reason they became "The U".
Florida offense under Spurrier showed the ones still trying to be the old Nebraska I formation that "you can't get behind and even if you are ahead of these team they can come back because they pass it all around the field"! Run heavy teams can't come back as quick and had better not get behind.

Miami is good - but I don't believe they are there yet! But, that is why they play the game, right?

Who?

Is that in Ohio?

There is a reason

Oct 8, 2020, 12:06 AM

that “Catholics vs Convicts“ was a thing.

If you are too young to remember “The U” from the late 80’s and early 90’s, then you can not be expected to understand how low their standards of behavior were. There is no team today that even remotely approaches the universe that Miami lived in for 10 years.

I attended the "Catholics vs. Convicts" game @ ND. We lost that game to Holtz who hated Jimmy Johnson. It amused me to watch Holtz squat & pick & chew on grass practically the entire game. The young ND student who had shirts printed up made a fortune. I still have my shirt from that game. The funny thing however was the fact that at the time, Miami had more catholics on their team than ND did and ND had had more "arrests" than Miami. We actually had very few arrests or police matters. The team was loud-mouthed, arrogant, show-offs, intimidators with a lot of black culture such as grills, etc. Thus, many thought we were thugs when in essence they were probably just "wanna-bes". BTW Jimmy Johnson was a psych major with a Mensa Society IQ but he hated the obligatory speeches to the Alum & Hurricane boosters.. He never hung around and mingled with us after his presentation like our other coaches did. He still lives down the road in the Keys.

I am sure you have sensed that I am an OLD 'Cane. My late husband was a scholarship football player @ Miami in the early 60's & played with Jim Otto (00 center for the Raiders) Back then schools scheduled us for their homecoming games for a sure win....then Coach JJ appeared in the 80's and emphasized speed & we became the intimidators of football for a number of years *& now we have been in a dead period for nearly 10 years....nothing lasts forever. After Bear B., Alabama went thru the same thing till Saban came on board.

Clemson has a great coach, an NFL quality QB & RB, update equipment/facility & a solid program. You also have good loyal fans. When we met us Saturday honestly the best I can hope for is that we can give your guys a good game - hope being the key word. Stay safe and lets all enjoy the game.

You think that Miami will score 16 points? And hold us to no more than 44 points?

That's right Doc. Miami is 44 - 16 Alabama equal.
