He was the first manufacturer of cotton gins in South Carolina and was the owner of Ellison plantation in Sumter county South Carolina and owned over 60 slaves. Oh I almost forgot he was also a black man, he was one of many free black men and women who owned slaves in the United States.

Because Tillman is an important part of Clemson's history and rather or not it "wokes" you doesn't matter.
