Watkins wanted to be a Tiger since sophomore year

Freshman WR Sammy Watkins said earlier this week that he made up his mind about Clemson during his sophomore year of high school, saying he knew it would be the perfect place to fulfill his plan for greatness. Full Story »

If I wasn't impressed with this young man already, this did it. I've felt that he has a quiet dignity about him since I started following him, but this takes the cake. I wish him the very best. He's got a good head on his shoulders.

Has anyone noticed that Dabo is recruiting young men with talent AND character? Kudos to his parents for his upbringing.

Sep 7, 2011, 5:25 PM

How does character help if they can't win ball games? I'll take winners over good character any day.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Don't be an idiot...

Sep 7, 2011, 5:37 PM

You can have character AND win ball games. I don't give a hoot about winning if we have a bunch USuCk type players on our team. And I'm serious about that. No pride in winning with a bunch of thug ringers.

Remember, it's college football. These are young boys...most of whom won't make it to the next level.

#### coot.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Don't be an idiot...

Sep 7, 2011, 5:41 PM

So you would rather go 0-12 with good character guys than 12-0 with guys who do not have good character? I'm a SCar fan and we have sucked in the past with good character guys and now we are finally winning with some not so good character guys and trust me it's a heck of a lot better to win than lose.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Don't be an idiot...

Sep 7, 2011, 5:44 PM

Derek Watson? Demetrius Summers? Mo Thompson?

Yall sucked back then.

And you're missing my point. I don't know who came up with the idea that you can't be good and have good character guys. There are so many other factors that go into winning.

Having guys like Sammy with character in no way reduces your chances of winning.

There is no cause and effect relationship between being a thug and a winner...or a classy guy and a loser.

Again, that's dumb.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Don't be an idiot...

Sep 7, 2011, 5:46 PM

Sorry, I am going to have to disagree with you. Please show me a national champion football team in the last 5 - 10 years that has been perfect angels? Thugs win games not choir boys.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No college football team has perfect angels...

Winners can't have good character? Tim Tebow say Hi.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Watkins wanted to be a Tiger since sophomore year

Sep 8, 2011, 9:39 AM

Great comparison, Insane. Tebow, who was 35-6 in his career with a Heisman and NC, compared to Garcia who is 17-13 and has been suspended 5 times. The first two matches that pop up when I Google "Stephen Garcia" are "Stephen Garcia arrested" and "Stephen Garcia suspended".

Stupid Coot, winning and character aren't mutually exclusive. There's more of a correlation there than your teeny little peecock brain will allow you to comprehend.

I kinda believe the kid b/c after he committed he didn't talk to any more schools and told his coaches to not even let them come to the school to see him anymore.

yes but he didn't commit until oct, november of 2010

Sep 7, 2011, 9:12 PM

almost at the end of his senior season. he says he knew since a sophomore.

In June of 2010 (the summer after his junior season & before his senior season) Miami was #1 & Michigan was #2 and we weren't even in his top 5. He came to Dabo Swinney football camp at end of june and then we shot to his #1

...at Clemson.

To me, anyone wearing the No. 2 jersey at Clemson is wearing Frank Magwood's jersey. Frank was at Clemson when I was there and on the national championship team. Danny always said that Frank had the best hands on the team.

I grew up in Fort Myers many years ago. I don't remember Fort Myers as the violent place that Sammy describes it to be now. However, Sammy may be the player in my mind that finally earns the right to "own" the No. 2 jersey.

I'm pulling and praying for his good health and safety on the field as I do for all the Clemson players.

I wish I would have been that focused at his age.

Once he is through with his NFL career, he could come back and coach at Clemson. He says all the right things. I hope it all works out for him.

Sep 9, 2011, 8:13 PM

And why is that relevant? You could tell Sammy was a little wary about that question and frankly, I was too. Why does this guy need to know what his parents do down in Florida? Stop disrupting a good interview with your sketchy questions, guy.
