Malcolm X was an articulate and eloquent orator. He spoke at Universities you probably would qualify academically to attend and yet you question his ability to speak English. That's funny.

Sorry man, but he's got a point. Can you focus on that first sentence and defend the grammar? "There is no better than adversity." Is it supposed to be "nothing" instead of no? That would make sense. As it stands, I don't get it.

The quote is grammatically correct.

Jan 13, 2016, 10:04 AM [ in reply to Malcolm should have attended English class.*** ]

It's as if you were talking about Tom Brady as he relates to other QB's--"There is no better than Tom Brady." Perhaps Malcom X's syntax is too complex for you, and perhaps it's you who needs English remediation.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The quote is grammatically correct.

Jan 13, 2016, 10:31 AM

"No better" as used is similar to an adjective which would modify a noun. There is no noun present therefore it's improper grammar. Sorry; he wrong bro.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: The quote is grammatically correct.

Jan 13, 2016, 10:59 AM

Better can be a noun, verb, adjective or adverb. It is used here as a noun consistent with its definition as such.

My apologies orangeman. The next time I see someone erroneously insult a historical figure on here, I will remain silent and make better use of my time by thinking of creative ways to shorten three-letter words and convey profanity without actually using any. Thank you for your substantive response. You can return to your cave now.

No, you are wrong. "better" is correctly used as a noun in the first sentence, which is perfectly acceptable. Malcolm X was clearly well above your understanding of the English language. So please, "Clempsun", crawl back in your hole and go watch 2015 highlight videos of your 3-9 gamecocks.

Heisman Donor here

Jan 13, 2016, 2:43 PM

Not a Carolina fan. I'm sure I'm a lot smarter than Malcolm X. And, by the way, better is an adjective; the noun in the quote is implied. Just because somebody said it doesn't mean it makes sense. No racial overtones here for those sensitive pansies - it's a simple statement. X should have gone to English class. Go to Daniel Hall and ask a professor.

you and the intentions behind your original post. And you're no grammar whiz either. Malcolm X is saying there is nothing better than adversity..."there is no better"...meaning NOTHING IS BETTER than adversity because of what adversity teaches us.

But this was never really about grammar for you, was it?

Actually your incorrect. The word Adversity is a noun.

ad·ver·si·ty

noun
difficulties; misfortune.
"resilience in the face of adversity"
synonyms: misfortune, ill luck, bad luck, trouble, difficulty, hardship, distress, disaster, suffering, affliction, sorrow, misery, tribulation, woe, pain, trauma;

The statement is grammatically correct.

Well i am not sure about all the grammar but it sure seems like ole Malcom started in the middle of something or left a word out.
By the way i looked it up and the quote is correct and I do understand it.

After Malcolm x travelled to the Holy Land and saw whites and blacks and all races worshipping together he had a complete change of heart. That's why when he came back he was excommunicated from the nation of Islam and many believe they had him killed for speaking out against them.

I dont understand how some of yall can proudly root for a team full of black athletes but hate black culture so much. It was the same thing when Cam Newton said he was voting for Deshaun in the Heisman. Some people on this thread went all out of the way to talk down about Cam after he complimented your QB. Its 2016 some yall (not all) need to get with the times

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Malcolm should have attended English class.***

Jan 13, 2016, 3:25 PM

Why do you assume that has anything to do with race? I love Cam Newton but the people i know who do not like him is because of his shenanigans after play and the way he conducted himself in college and the illegal money his father got for his services at Auburn. (Agin he is one of my favorite players) Those things have nothing to do with race.
I am just guessing but the reason some people may not like brother Malcom has nothing to do with his skin color but a lot with what he said and taught and the hatred he had for whites for at least some of his life. I know that does not fit your racist agenda! You just maybe the one that is racist.

The Truth!

Jan 13, 2016, 10:48 AM

Born on May 19, 1925, in Omaha, Nebraska, Malcolm X was a prominent black nationalist leader who served as a spokesman for the Nation of Islam during the 1950s and '60s. Due largely to his efforts, the Nation of Islam grew from a mere 400 members at the time he was released from prison in 1952 to 40,000 members by 1960. Articulate, passionate and a naturally gifted and inspirational orator, Malcolm X exhorted blacks to cast off the shackles of racism "by any means necessary," including violence.
