He says he didn’t deal with it much at all in high school. He’s certainly not the only prep star RB who has made similar statements.

Do running backs in high school routinely go through four years of coaching without being taught pass blocking skills?

If so, why?

The inability to provide effective pass protection seems to be the number one reason why otherwise “game ready” freshman RBs find themselves watching from the sidelines once they get to college.

The reason for that in high school, is that there's only one or two good to great players and other people are blocking for them. They're not ask to block because they're the ones carrying the ball.

Coaching at any position is extremely uneven from school to school in HS sports.

I played HS football in SC and had outstanding coaches- one of them coached under Frank Howard.

My boys have played HS football in Fl and NC and have had very different experiences.

Some coaches really know what they are doing when it comes to the technical aspects of particular positions.

Others just focus on running plays or sets without much attention to things like footwork, hand placement, pursuit angles, etc. depending on position.

It all depends on what offense the school runs.

Exactly.
A kid from an Air Raid system might know how to PB. A kid from a option attack not so much.

Good point.

Seems like we have had a succession of really good ball carriers come in without the initial pass blocking skills and abilities to get on the field early.

They get in the game late when the score is settled and we don’t need to pass anymore.

Fortunately, they seem to catch on by their second year.

There are still ALOT of high school offenses that don't
