Loving the historic Clemson photos! I have a question.

Apr 14, 2020, 8:56 PM

I’ve noticed in many of these old photos from when Clemson was still an all male military college, many of the guys had fairly long hair. Longer than the military allows, anyway. I’m guessing there weren’t strict rules about this at that time?

What was the dress code like? Military uniforms only at certain times? Shirt and tie otherwise?

Military hair cuts were required. I got one every week. Uniform was seven days a week. You were free to wear civies on Saturday afternoons after classes and Sundays. We didn't have been civilian clothes so it was uniforms most of the time, such as to church. Clemson was military 24/7. You couldn't leave on weekends unless you had a pass. '48-'52

Shocking that orange overalls weren't part of the dress code then, given the fact that people wear them today to "honor our history."

It was called Clemson Agricultural College upon inception.

You're a tater by degree? Good on you if so.

Don't know, don't care, it's meaningful & powerful in paying

earned homage to Clemson's very being.

It's OK if you don't like it, you've that right. But Tater or Tiger, by any other name the degree should still be as sweet.

Have you seen the light hit the right woman sporting a fine pair of orange overalls? It's really something.

But carry on wayward son, if you're a Tater by degree.

Not sure Judge but some of that may be veterans of WW2 who returned to Clemson and I believe were exempt from the military requirements....

I wasn't in Clemson until 1955 but was told all WW2 veterans were exempt from the Military activities. The 1955-56 school year was the first year Clemson was not all Military. WW2 veterans were exempt from ROTC at colleges where there were ROTC programs.
