Little Ol' Clemson

Dec 21, 2019, 6:47 PM

Ohio State: 61,391 students.
Clemson 24,951 students.

Clemson is actually the smallest school in the CFP, and I think the smallest to win any CFP game. It's pretty amazing what Clemson has been able to do with far less resources and alumni.

Clemson University is also located in the smallest host city of all 65 Power 5 schools.

I've posted this before, I think CU was probably the baddest

azzz school in college sports history when I was there 1975-79. I'm talking about "pound for pound". We had roughly 10,000 students in that era. The football team in 1978 was 11-1 and finished #6 in the country. The basketball team was 22-5 in the old ACC, when you played everybody twice. The baseball team went to the College World Series. And the soccer team was typically ranked #1 in the nation or close to it back then. There's your top 4 sports. And the tennis team was nationally ranked, as was swimming, track & field, etc.

Just pick a sport and bring em on down to Clemson... we'll kick their azzz and send em back home.

At the time, I didn't realize just how much we were "overachieving". Then in my first job I met a guy from App St and took him to visit the Clemson campus. His reaction - "This is it? App St is bigger than this." And he was right, as I recall they had 12,000 students. And then I started traveling for business and had a chance to see UCLA, Ohio St, etc. Those schools dwarfed lil ol Clemson... we looked like a podunk little community college by comparison....

A drunk will run a STOP sign, but a stoner will wait for it to turn green.

and it’s grown a lot recently

When I was at Clemson just a few years ago it was at 19,000.

Also Ohio state is massive and has huge alumni base. So I don’t see why I am supposed to be impressed that their fans go to games. They are so big, it’s honestly a failure anytime they aren’t good in any sport

I am amazed how much it has grown since my years in the 90s

Close to 16K almost every year I was there. Trying to imagine almost 10K more students!

We got 24,000 students now?
Dang things have changed. Back in my day we were probably close to 12,000.

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

This is also why we get no press...

....small tv market, the rest of the country doesn’t care about us.

This is what we will always be

I still remember when we beat Nebraska in 81 - no one thought Little Ol' Clemson had a chance

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-20yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

we were ranked #1 and Nebraska was ranked #4

Dec 22, 2019, 7:44 AM

some knew we had a chance. We've never been favored though in any of our NC games.
