Of course, TheRump is a blithering idiot. Who else would go on FoxFakeNews, twice, and brag about passing an Alzheimers screening test. (Everyone in medicine knows that if you don't "ace" that test, the Doctor asks you to give him your car keys.) (FYI, my M-in-law had "bad" dimentia, for three years, and then "aced" the Alzheimers scanning test.)

Such an idiot! You can't make this stuff up!!!

The real question, is who on his staff had the cajones to:

Aug 10, 2020, 2:34 PM [ in reply to Why? Other than you don't like the numbers? ]

I mostly blame America's independent streak. The "don't tell me what to do" attitude in America isn't always good. This is one such example.

Do we truly have more cases than most other places? Yes, I believe we do. But I also believe we are testing a lot more asymptomatic people than most other countries.

I also don't trust the numbers from places like China. They have shown to be less than 100% truthful from the start.

My point is that I don't believe the difference in COVID cases in the United States is as drastic as the current numbers suggest.

Seriously, it warrants further scrutiny. As Dr. Park used

Aug 10, 2020, 1:48 PM

to say, "Calculators lie!" We'll have to delve into the details to understand truly what is happening here, but just as it strains credulity to claim that there's some vast worldwide conspiracy of underreporting, it also strains credulity to think that America, due to the behavior of the average citizen and lack of conformity, is getting hit that much worse than the rest of the world. The number of variables to consider are off the charts.

The protests
The testing process and interpretation of results
The quality of the data
The incentives of the healthcare industry
The cosmopolitan nature of the country
The accuracy of other countries' data

According to this site:
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/#countries

USA has 15,749 cases per 1M population.
Do we trust Mexico, when they say they have 3,708 per 1M?
El Salvador has 3,216 per 1M?
The Philippines has 1,245 per 1M?
Venezuela has 908 per 1M?
Are we sure the test in America is reporting the same results as Germany and France?

You can't accept these statistics on the surface. So many of these countries that are marked so significantly below us have objectively and significantly lower quality healthcare infrastructures, less ability to communicate to their citizens and develop access to cleaning supplies, etc. No one is saying we did everything right but, as I have been saying, when the world gets a moment to take a breath, I think we'll find some unbelievable findings in the audit of the worldwide response.

Swarley,

I think you make an excellent point about the number of variables involved.

However, I do think our lack of national leadership and our citizen's significant unwillingness to sacrifice a little personal "freedom' to benefit the good of the whole have hampered our response to the virus substantially. Those things could help account for our much worse response.

How are we not doing a great job?

Aug 10, 2020, 5:12 PM

What could we have done differently?

Shut everything COMPLETELY down in January or February, when it was racist and xenophobic to block China? There were 103 confirmed US cases on March 3rd. Nobody (left, right, or middle) would have bought off on a complete economic shutdown and human lockdown in January or February.

Make mask wearing a federal mandate? How is it people who wear masks are still catching the virus? Is it solely the fault of those not wearing masks? Not buying that. Masks do not prevent the transmission of respiratory viruses, even when everyone wears one.

The only thing we can do to literally "get the virus under control" is to shut everything down. Essentials would operate and deliver essential materials to those sequestered. Is that feasible?

Just curious what we could have done better?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Honestly, all of my examples are in hindsight...

Aug 11, 2020, 10:53 AM

It seems like we were slow to protect the elderly - even though is was obvious in the early stages that it hit them hardest. (So, we were not great)

This administration and the previous administration had opportunities to be proactive - by stockpiling ventilators and PPE, but neither did despite warnings from their experts (So, we were not great)

I know where the US stands currently with what is allowed and what isn't (generally) but I don't actual know what other countries are doing...

I do think masks help (even if just a little). That said, I have enough sense to go to the grocery store without a mask, keep my distance, don't interact too much - and be perfectly safe.

Aug 10, 2020, 12:48 PM

While you may believe some people are not doing a great job social distancing/etc. please don't use statistics as your basis of reasoning. There are so many determining factors/outliers such as some test having up to 40% false positives, some countries not reporting all number, some countries not even having the availability for test or ability to report number of cases, and may other reasons.

There are far too many statistical outliers to even try to rationalize using mere numbers that show up your tv screen from whatever news station you choose to watch.

The only number that matters is the deaths per million of population. The USA performed terribly. At 488 per million one of the highest in the world. Turkey was at 69 per million without testing. They told people with symptoms to call a number and took them HCQ and called them back in three days if they still had symptoms they then test them if positive they were sent to hospital for heavy HCQ and vitamins with oxygen. Their average hospital stay was 5 days. We played politics and let people die. At 69 per million we would have only lost about 22k.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

From CDC's own website

Aug 10, 2020, 2:17 PM

If you test positive
A positive test result shows you may have antibodies from an infection with the virus that causes COVID-19. However, there is a chance a positive result means that you have antibodies from an infection with a virus from the same family of viruses (called coronaviruses), such as the one that causes the common cold.
Having antibodies to the virus that causes COVID-19 may provide protection from getting infected with the virus again. If it does, we do not know how much protection the antibodies may provide or how long this protection may last.
Talk with your healthcare provider about your test result and the type of test you took to understand what your result means. Your provider may suggest you take a second type of antibody test to see if the first test was accurate.
You should continue to protect yourself and others since you could get infected with the virus again.
If you work in a job where you wear personal protective equipment (PPE), continue wearing PPE.
You may test positive for antibodies even if you have never had symptoms of COVID-19. This can happen if you had an infection without symptoms, which is called an asymptomatic infection.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Incomplete statistics.

Aug 10, 2020, 2:36 PM

First, we don't know anywhere near how many cases countries like China, North Korea, Russia, etc.have.

Secondly. Most countries are testing people who don't have symptoms. For example, if the University wasn't wasn't requiring returning staff or players to get tested, we would never know of all those "cases" because most never had any symptoms and wouldn't have gotten the test in the first place. We have more "cases" because we test more.

The only way to know the true numbers is to test every citizen of every country. And, of course, that'll never happen.

She had to get tested again before returning to work. She went every 5 days for a test and had 4 more positive tests before having a negative one. She was told that would show up in the overall count as 4 more cases, rather than 1 person tested 5 times. That might skew the numbers a bit!

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Let’s focus on the death rates, as this is a much more relevant statistic.

Aug 10, 2020, 7:46 PM

US has 4% of the worlds population and 23% of the worlds deaths. This takes away the argument of too much testing blah blah blah. In fact, tons of testing should help deaths as those that are contagious can quarantine. The problem is about half the test take many days to process, which makes them useless. There is some evidence that this is improving, and let’s hope that trend continues.

No question Trump has limited control over this. But we just have not done well compared to others anyway you look at it. Many reasons why we are so bad at coronavirus response. We are one of the fattest countries in the world which no one wants to talk about, we have more international travel than most all countries, and our government structure is not conducive to a unified federal message. We have this don’t tread on me individualist approach that doesn’t work with coronavirus. Yes, there are some European countries with lower death rates per thousand. But let’s see where we are in a few months. At the moment they are clearly doing better than we are. The UK screwed up royally,(no pun intended), and their leader is very similar to Trump. Not a coincidence in my opinion

However, we have to admit that Trump is the most divisive president in history. Some of it is not all bad, and that is why he was elected to push back on politics as usual. Since our country has never been more divided, half the country doesn’t trust federal leadership. Trumps maverick style got him elected, but just not what we need for coronavirus response.

Trumps strengths have hurt him with coronavirus. He’s an entrepreneur who is a gambler from a business standpoint and goes with his gut instinct. He miscalculated that we should open the economy even though this went against CDC guidelines. Well this was a mistake, I understand it, and he just took a gamble and lost. What I can’t excuse is him making wearing a mask a political statement. That was just his narcissism getting the best of him.

While its ridiculous to say the US has handled coronavirus well, I was very encouraged by trumps press conference tonight. His tone was better, his number of lies was much less. And I hope this continues. He has to come across as more levelheaded and fact based to win this election. If you remember, he became much more disciplined two or three months before the 2016 election. Trump does hate to lose, which I do admire so we will see what happens

Our tests far exceed the global avg. In SC we have tested 20%, 1/5 tested. Found around 10% test positive. New stats say that every case has 9 more infected. If that is true, SC is almost 100% exposed and we are surpassed saturation. We have seen dramatic decline in numbers. From new studies, South Carolina has a .27% death rate and that number is elevated from poor handling and I expect it to be very similar to Flu in long run.

Our hospitals nor ventilators got over 60%, barely hit 50%, but NY needed ships amd makeshift hospitals. Seattle needed hospitals and temporary housing. Good thing DemChits can handle their crisis!

My employer policy, which has since changed, required a negative test before returning to work after a 14 day quarantine. Re: US has 4% of world’s population and 25% of world covid cases

Aug 13, 2020, 5:01 PM

The important statistic is the per capita mortality rate from the disease. It is not based on how many tests are given. It is how many people in a given country have died per capita. Johns Hopkins has a current chart that shows the U.S. has the 8th highest mortality rate in the world out of about 160 countries. The United Kingdom has more deaths per capita and is lead, if you can use that term, by someone similar to Trump. Germany has about 25% of the rate of deaths that we do. S. Korea and Japan have less than that. I would have attached the Johns Hopkins charts but they were too large to attach. Do a Google search of "Covid mortality rate per capita" and the Johns Hopkins material pops up. There is simply no other explanation for this horrible result except lack of leadership. I think everyone would agree that the virus enemy is the same in S.C., as every other state in the nation. That being the case, why in God's name would we not have a uniform, nationwide strategy to fight it? Instead POTUS chose to fight it state by state, city by city and county by county. And, lets face it, some of our states are led by idiots.

I don't know why in the heck Trump did not start working warnings about poor diets leading to diabetes, morbid obesity, etc. and our nations lack of exercise, and failure to promote eating nutritious food 50 years ago when he was 23 years old. Yes, since his lack of attention to that in the 1960's and 70's has certainly led to our higher mortality rate. We can lay all of that at his feet.
