There were probably numerous teams to beat Bama badly when Dubose and Shula were HC's. Bama went thru several years trying to find a decent coach (Franchione, Price fired before coaching a game) before Saban arrived. Even Joe Kines as interim wasn't exactly what Bama needed to win like Saban does. Bama was just an average team until Saban was hired.

Their period of mediocrity was relatively short compared to ours. I’m guessing our current success will set us up for similar urgency when the time comes again.

Actually, there are only a few really bad loses even in their "dark years". They kept it close to Spurrier's Florida more often than not. Even their 4 win season was just a bunch of close losses....

1995 41-14 loss at home to UT was about is bad as it got. 42-6 to Arky in '98 but that was a road game.

Of course the other problem was that Bammy was cheating so much they made congress look like a bunch of honest chaps. Bammy's model is that they don't lose, only vacate wins.
