Obviously you do not know what a good baseball team looks like. Jack Leggett is washed up. As a fan I am entitled to my opinion. Give proof to why you think Jack is not washed up Deroberts? Hey Deroberts how many baseball games have you watched? I go to the games and I have been watching a steady decline over the past five years.I prefer Tim Corbin

I have been saying this for years. Jack can get Clemson to the post season. His teams can not get over the hump. I have never seen a Clemson baseball team struggle to score runs like this team. Clemson got swept by Wake by a combined score of 14-3. Swept by Western Carolina. Lost to Presbyterian. I can not ever remember a Jack Leggett team being swept by Western Carolina or Wake.

you'd be all over the team and the coaches, regardless of what had happened the year before. There's absolutely NO EXCUSE for a team that's as good and as "well coached" as South Carolina to lost to a Division 2 team. None at all.

May 24, 2012, 11:18 PM [ in reply to Re: Candidates to replace Jack Leggett ]

Anyone who thinks otherwise has their head in the sand. His only good seasons came when he had a great staff. If we want to win championships, then a change must be made. 2 ACC Championships in 18 years should be unacceptable at a program like ours.

Our rival to the south has a championship calibre coach. We need an upgrade.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

What did the "rival to the south"...

May 24, 2012, 11:21 PM

win before his school spent 30 million dollars on a new stadium?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well, for starters

May 24, 2012, 11:28 PM

Tanner has won two conference titles well before Jack got his second here. Oh yeah, and those players from those National Championship teams were signed well before that 30 million dollar stadium was built.

On another note, UVA has won just as many ACC titles in three years that Jack has won altogether.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

No they weren't...

May 24, 2012, 11:45 PM

that stadium opened in time for the 2008 season, and that was a year behind schedule. Tanner could take recruits to the site and say "See, this is being built and will be ready for you". All Jack Leggett has to show recruits is pictures and a dream. According to his interview with David Hood the other day, I think Dr. Phillips has finally realized that the new facilities at Doug Kingsmore are vitally important and he can't wait 2 or 3 more years to get started. Construction needs to be under way when the players come back in August.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

My head isn't in the sand...

May 25, 2012, 1:00 AM

I realize the shortcomings of Clemson's facilities, unlike many of you. I also know that Carolina Stadium opened in 2008, which was a year behind the original schedule. That means construction started in 2005 or 06, which allowed Tanner to take recruits by the construction site and show them where they'd be playing. All Jack Leggett has to show recruits is architect's pictures. If you don't think facilities matter then you're an idiot. And if you think Clemson's player facilities are up-to-date with other schools in the region, then you're equally ignorant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: My head isn't in the sand...

May 25, 2012, 7:51 AM

what was your excuse for Jacks lack of winning any championships when our facilities weren't "bad" as you now say that are. (Which I disagree with). They might not be top notch but they are still top 25.

I have mostly stayed out of the baseball discussion that I occasionally read on here for much the same reason I don't read or post on Tigernet as much as I used to... because most of the posts are short-sighted (retrospectively and/or prospectively) and full of whining. It's not a fun world to live it when you live and die by the outcome of a one-run 13 inning game. I love Clemson and Clemson baseball in particular. I'm disappointed in this season to some extent, but not as much as 2008 and I'm not ready to commit program suicide by firing/forcing out another legend like we did in Men's Soccer, Men's Tennis, and Men's Track.

I'm posting now mainly because I'm tired of seeing the comments that this program has been in decline since Jack took over. That is simply untrue and has ZERO basis in facts. Also that idea that our peak was when Wilheim left the program is untrue - unless your sole measurement for what determines a peak is ACC championships and you don't want to consider the change in competitiveness of the league over that time. Unlike some people that want to throw out random statements based on what happened in the last two baseball games of a 60+ game season, I'm prepared with some facts to back up the falsehood of the "constant decline" statement.

Here are Clemson's top 5 and bottom five years under Jack based on final ranking and tourney progression:
Top 5 (in rough order): 2002, 1996, 2010, 2006, 2000
Bottom 5: 2008, 2003, 1997, 2004. 2012 will likely be similar to 2003 or 1997.

How do you see decline in that? The best and worse years are all over the place. The best years are definitely not concentrated in the early years (in fact only one of his best 5 seasons are "Wilheim's players" and that one was his THIRD year after Wilheim, so more of his own players). The worst 5 are not concentrated in the latter years - in fact all of them were 1-2 years after one of the top 5 seasons (consistent with a turnover in experience).

Average rank in Leggett's first 6 seasons (one excluded for NR) is 11th. Average rank in Leggett's middle 6 seasons (one excluded for NR) is 12th. Average rank in Leggett's most recent 6 seasons (one excluded for NR) is 11th. That's Collegiate Baseball. If you prefer Baseball America, it's 11th, 14th, and 13th. Seems consistent to me, not a constant decline.

Average progress in playoffs in first 6 seasons is equivalent of Super Regional. Average progress in playoffs in most recent 6 seasons is Super Regional. Again, fairly consistent and not a constant decline.

I hate the fact that in our 7 great (top 10) seasons out of 18 under Leggett we haven't managed to win a championship, but we have THREE final four-equivalents (1996, 2002, and 2010 - another stat not showing decline). I hate the fact that Tanner and Company has been able to have the perfect storm two years in a row to win it. However, I also don't like when people's whining includes things that aren't true like that our program is in decline. It gives a false impression to recruits and fans in general.

This team is YOUNG and a cycle off of our great 2010 team. If the pattern that has held true for the past 18 years CONSISTENTLY holds true again, then 2013 will be a good year and 2014 will be an outstanding year. I expect that. If we're unranked in one or both of those then come back and tell me that we are in decline - but at this point all the evidence says we are the model of consistency.

3 of top 5 in a 5 year window. 1 of top 5 in 5 years since. The 2 worst in the last 4 years. Seems like a decline to me. JL should have built of the momentum of the Baker,MJ, Greene years. Instead his assistant coaches got hired away and we faded.

He tried...

May 25, 2012, 1:08 AM

but was decimated by the draft in 2002 and had a recruiting coordinator that was more interested in boosting his own reputation than he was in actually recruiting players. You see, Sully has the ridiculous idea that losing incoming freshmen to the draft is somehow a GOOD THING. Or, at least he did when he was at Clemson. I notice that once he got to Florida, he made REAL sure that Karston Whitson got to campus, even though he was a first-round draft pick. I wonder why no first-rounders (or even some 14th and 15th rounders) made it to Clemson while he was the recruiting coordinator.

Have we asked any of these guys if they would like to leave their present coaching job?
Have any of them said they would come on board as soon as their season ended?
Has Jack even hinted at leaving?
If you were one of the above, would you leave your present gig just because Clemson came calling?
I would think that of right now the answer to these questions is a big NO.
So since this is your list you get to pick which one you would hire if they all said yes to coaching Clemson.
Remember ,you can only pick one!

He has single handedly made Jack Leggett his b!tch, as UVA has won 18 of the last 20 games in the series. Not bad for a program that was close to being shut down before he arrived.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

May 24, 2012, 11:30 PM

I've been to their ballpark. Nice, but not anywhere near DKS. We've had the facilities to be successful, just not the coaching.

I'd take O'Connor in a heartbeat over Leggett.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wrong...

May 24, 2012, 11:42 PM

their player facilities are WAY ahead of Clemson's. As are the ones in Chapel Hill. Doug Kingsmore looks good, and it's great for the fans and the media, but the player facilities are not even close to many of Clemson's rivals.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I seriously do not understand the love affair with that guy. Considering how people here cannot let go of 2002, no way they would let go of a coach with the National #1 seed losing the regional to e Big Ten team while possessing the #1, #2, and #9 overall picks (in 07, 08 drafts) plus Mike Minor now of the Braves.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

May 24, 2012, 11:49 PM

when Clemson "choked" in the College World Series in 2002? It's amazing that none of the Sully or Corbin fans wants to admit that they were part of that staff too. And he's from the Midwest, he has no ties to Clemson aside from being an assistant. I also seriously doubt he'd come back if Clemson fired Jack Leggett. His team DID just send Florida home, however.

Tim Corbin has a winning record. Know your facts before you open your pie hole. Overall

I have to disagree with you about our baseball facilities. It is very nice to you, but if you have seen the locker rooms and places for the players @ DKs, it is very un-impressive. You have probably walked by it several times at the games, and never noticed it. Compared to the West Zone it is a DUMP! I don't how Jack has done what he has with as little as he has had to work with. We are light years behind everyone else in facilities, not just USuC and UVA, even UNC has better BASEBALL facilities than we do. So give the coach a break and donate to the baseball team. They need it (obviously)

Re: Candidates to replace Jack Leggett

May 25, 2012, 7:59 AM

Sully isnt leaving UF.

Jack will stay here until he is ready to leave due to their being no accountability in our AD. We will continue to field good but not great/elite baseball teams. We will continue to play poor fundamentally sound baseball in the field and basepaths. We will continue to make stupid decisions at the plate. We will continue to NOT win Championships due to the lack of fundamentals. Last but not least people will continue to trash the young men in the field blaming them instead of the guy who is supposed to be coaching them.

One Championships in 17 years.... That is acceptable for some.

Augie Garrido?

Leggett has guided Clemson to 6 College World Series appearances since 1994. Leggett has averaged an impressive 45 wins a season and only 1 of his teams has failed to make a NCAA Regional. He has been named a 3 time ACC Coach of the Year with Clemson and even won 5 Southern Conference Championships while at Western Carolina.

Top 10 Active Coaches by number of Victories through 2011
