LSU Defense

Jan 7, 2020, 8:41 PM

The LSU guys, and some of our own, keep talking about the LSU defense as if it got better during the season. While the scores against may have gotten better, it is still not a good defense, compared to Clemson (11.5 pts given per game) or Ohio St (13.7). Here are the power five games they played, in order, with the score, and that offenses' ranking per Massey:

Texas 45 - 38; 9
Vanderbilt 66 - 38; 147
Florida 42 - 28; 14
Miss St 36 - 13; 54
Auburn 23 - 20; 19
Alabama 48 - 41; 3
Miss 58 - 37; 61
Arkansas 56 - 20; 103
Tex AM 50 - 7; 29
Georgia 37 - 10; 22
Ok 63 - 28; 5

Over the last 6 games, they have averaged giving up 23.8 points per game. For the whole year, and including the 3 non-power five games, they gave up 21.6 points per game. Vanderbilt scored 38 against them? Arkansas scored 20? Massey has them ranked #7 in defense, but their total points per game given up is still more than 10 points over what Clemson has given up. We scored 29 against Ohio St and their average given up before our win over them was 12.5, nearly half of what LSU is giving up now.

Thanks for the post. Of course, the argument is they were playing sec teams and not weak acc teams.

Not much into the draft but lsu does project 2 db's in the first round. Didn't see them play except for Bama and uga, but it will be epic if we take them down.

It's all about our D. Most especially about our D getting quality stops in the redzone like we did against oh4o.

But, the three best offenses they faced, Alabama, Oklahoma and Texas, scored 41, 28 and 38 against them, and none of those were as good an offense as Ohio st, which scored 23 on us. They can argue SEC all they want, but they allowed points, even 38 points to an offense (Vandy) ranked 147! Over all, Clemson allowed 2 teams to score 20 or more (20, 23)all season, while LSU allowed 8 teams to score 20 or more.

Right now, Massey has Clemson's schedule as the 14th toughest, and LSU as the 3rd toughest. Both teams have beaten 8 power five teams that have 6 or more wins.

24, but point taken.

Per the LSU site, Vandy scored 38 points...the final score was 66-38.

Re: LSU Defense

Vandy had a 1 yard fumble return for a td, and a 47 yard int return for a td with two minutes left in the game against Burrows backup.

LSU was up 49-6 on Arkansas going into 4th and Arkansas punched two meaningless tds in 4th in a game where LSU probably played more subs than any other game of the year.

Auburn game LSU actually held them to fewer yards than Georgia, Stingley muffs a punt in LSU territory and auburn scores on 4th and goal from 1 right before half for one of their scores.

Bama scores on a punt return by Jaylen waddle, a 64 yard td to Devonta Smith where Dave aranda was yelling to Stingley as the play was happening, Stingley turns to look at him and Smith runs scott free for a td, and then obviously the play with a minute to go where for some reason Aranda has LSU playing press man single high with a 12 point lead and 1:30 left, Stingley trips looking back to the ball and Smith goes 85 yards.

LSU had 49 points at half vs Oklahoma and Oklahoma scores two meaningless touchdowns in second half when LSU is freely substituting on D, still was fewest points scored by Lincoln Riley coached team at Oklahoma, and a season low 322 yards for Oklahoma, a team that was a hair behind LSU in total yards going into the game, had heisman runner up, and a top 5 scoring offense.

You really want to point to a game, point to the ole miss game for the defense...because their is no defending that lackluster performance other than LSU it was the game right after that huge Alabama win and LSU typically has let down games after the Alabama game, it’s a physical, draining game.

But the odd thing is you reference Massey rankings of LSU opponents, then question Massey ranking of LSU defense.

You say all of this, and somehow think that the same did not happen to Clemson? Your talk about the trash TD's against your defense goes on deaf (sorry, death) ears, as Clemson, who is one of the youngest teams in college ball, subs more than any other team, as usual! For home games (when the roster is in 100's with walk-ons and such in attendance) we routinely played over 100 in each game. Or road rosters (what is the limit? 79?) routinely had all players play.

It is great that you follow your team well enough to come up with these excuses!

The bottom line is that LSU has the 29th best pass defense in the country.
Clemson has the 2nd best pass defense in the country.

LSU is 56th in passing yards allowed
Clemson is number 1 in passing yards allowed

LSU is 20th in rushing yards allowed
Clemson is 15th in rushing yards allowed

LSU is 29th in total defense
Clemson is number 2 in total defense (Ohio st is #1, and look at what happened to them in the Fiesta)

The stat that should really scare you...Clemson has 80 freshmen and sophomores on this years team!

I’m still predicting 35-45 points for the good tigers and 30-40 for the swamp tigers.

They have gotten a lot better down the stretch and

Jan 7, 2020, 9:33 PM

they have had at least two key players return. A member of their secondary was injured the early part of the season. And they have a linebacker that is award winning, but took most of the season off and decided to come back for this game.

Cool post...now do the same for Clemson's schedule and get back to us. Let's see how much of that defense is buoyed by all those crap teams they played

Re: LSU Defense

Jan 7, 2020, 11:52 PM [ in reply to Re: LSU Defense ]

As I said, both teams played 8 games against power 5 teams that won 6 or more games. Clemson's schedule is rated as 14th best by Massey, and LSU's as third best. Does not hold up to your "crap teams" comment.

Against Ohio St, which had a better offense than LSU coming into the playoffs, we held them to less than half of their average per game. OSU had the second best defense at 12.5 per game, and we scored 29. If that same thing happens to LSU, we win easily. 29/12.5 = 2.32; 2.32 * 21.6 = 50.1. So, if we play like we did against a much better defense in OSU, we more than doubled their average points given up. Using the same factor on LSU's average given up per game, we score 50 points!

Take the LSU average scored per game, then half it like what happened in the Fiesta, then LSU scores 24.

So that makes the final Clemson 50, LSU 24....but then, according to you, Ohio State is a "crap team".

Ohio St and Clemson were the two best teams in the playoff...they were ranked #1 and #2 in defense. OSU was #1 in offense coming in and Clemson was #4. Oklahoma is now the 5th best offense and the 44th best defense...No comparing them to Clemson or OSU.

Yes, LSU is good...but not good enough to talk the way y'all do!

By comparison, LSU guys like to talk about Texas as a great win...Texas had 3 wins against power five teams with 6 or more wins...Great team!

Alabama had 3 wins against P5 teams with 6 or more wins!!!!

Auburn had 4!

Florida had 5!

Tennessee had 3!

Missouri, Arkansas, had 0!

Mississippi, Miss St, TEX AM, Vandy had 1!

South Carolina, Kentucky had 2!

Georgia had a respectable 7.

On the other side, NCST had 0

Ga Tech, Pitt, Duke, Syracuse, UNC had 1,

Boston College, Fla St had 2

Wake forest, Louisville had 3

Virginia, Va tech, Miami had 4

Notre Dame had 6 (mostly ACC teams)

So, apparently, the SEC is comparable to the ACC! 32 ACC to 38 SEC

Clemson had plenty of scores against our 3rd & 4th string defense in the final quarter of the game when we played everyone but the waterboy! Tell me how often Etienne and Lawrence & other starters were in the game for more than a few minutes after the first half was over! Most scores against Clemson this year were against subs and they were hard fought...our subs could start for most programs.. Brice would start at most programs in the country...so would Turner, Spector, and many others...All this trash talk and statistics can be thrown into the front yard Monday night with the faux Tigers!
