Rumors of Clowney sitting out next season are gaining ground

Jan 5, 2013, 9:55 AM

He may sit to avoid what Lattimore endured and work out to gain strength and weight plus avoid injury and protect his projected number 1 draft status.

With an ego maniac, uncompassionate coach like OBS it actually makes sense.

Jan 6, 2013, 2:46 PM

It would turn into a long drawn out ordeal that almost certainly wouldn't get decided for at least a year, meaning he would essentially be throwing away the entire season. I have trouble seeing how much that could actually benefit him.

He won't be the #1 player in the draft if he sits out.
And he certainly won't be a Heisman contender either.

If that is true in the least, it has to be an academic issue

Jan 5, 2013, 10:06 AM

I've been wondering how in the ###### he's been eligible so far. My guess would be if he sits out it's because they've been fudging his grades and can't get away with it any longer.

Re: If that is true in the least, it has to be an academic issue

Jan 5, 2013, 10:58 AM

what would be more fun would be to find out when the last day it was that he actually stepped foot in a classroom and the last time he actually did any school work on his own.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Now that is correct.

Jan 5, 2013, 11:25 AM

Mr. Clowney has done virtually nothing to stay academically eligible. His status as a "student" athlete is a complete farce. A literal joke. The kid does virtually NOTHING yet skates through so-called college. The school knows it, Clowney knows it, and Spurrier knows it. It's truly an embarrassment to the educational system, but then again, it's pretty common stuff in the SEC. And yes, cockfans, I know UNC was doing the same thing.

Not saying he's a Rhodes Scholar, but he isn't much different from any other college football player. Clowney is fine and isn't in danger of failing out. He knows he needs to keep his act together for two more semesters.

The beatings will continue in November

Re: LOL. Maybe pigs really can grow wings!***

Jan 5, 2013, 11:45 AM [ in reply to Re: LOL. Maybe pigs really can grow wings!*** ]

The young man is obviously one of the best football players this state has ever produced. But to suggest he's not much different from any other college football player, that's a figment of your imagination. The kid barely knows how to spell class let alone attend one. He is being given a free ride, in many more ways than one.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

. Don't

Jan 5, 2013, 11:31 AM [ in reply to Re: If that is true in the least, it has to be an academic issue ]

be fooled. H3ll, we had one the same way this year. Bellamy was ineligible because of grades. All he had to do was attend class while not playing this year, pull his grades up, then he would have been on the team next year. He wanted to play, went the Junior College route, doubt he'll ever get back in.

Clowney in the same situation wouldn't even worry about going to class. His draft status is settled, no use in going to class. BUT these stupid "he'll save himself for the draft" rumors are stupid. If they get him good enough grades, he'll play. If not, he will have no use to attend class while waiting on the draft.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It makes no sense to compare

Jan 5, 2013, 11:47 AM

Bellamy and Clowney.

Bellamy was kicked out of Clemson because of his lack of academic commitment.

Clowney's lack of academic commitment is encouraged and fostered.

It's not rumors, just the wrong excuse.

Jan 5, 2013, 10:13 AM

With his learning disability, he may not qualify to be listed as a junior next year. A normal college football player would just attend school while be ineligible then play for 1 or 2 more years. A freak like Clowney has no reason to hang around once he's draft eligible. It's just better to say in public he's sitting out whether he continues to attend classes or not.

It happens every year. A good number of the Juniors that declare early are just because they wouldn't be illegible to play.

That's what hurt with Bellamy. all he had to do was stay on campus, attend school this year, make his grades and he would have been part of the team in 2013.But, he wanted to play.

Re: Rumors of Clowney sitting out next season are gaining ground

As far as Clemson's success, I'm not the least bit concerned

Jan 5, 2013, 11:42 AM [ in reply to Re: Rumors of Clowney sitting out next season are gaining ground ]

about the utter disregard of the educational system for young Mr. Clowney and several others in your football program. While what's going on in Columbia is a complete disgrace to the state's educational system, Clemson's success and undeniable growth trend are not affected by the nonsense going on down there... All for the sake of winning a few football games. It's pathetic, really, that supposed responsible adults would allow these sort of things to go on, but I guess that's another subject for another time.

In any case, none of that affects Clemson and their pledge of doing things the right way. None of it will affect the verifiable growth of our program.

But if I were you, I'd would be concerned about the well above average amount of personnel losses and tackles you're going to have on defense.

ESPiN crowd... No, that was LSU. My mistake. Kidding aside, Venables was looking for answers all season and now he knows what he's working with. I think we'll see improvement across the board, but especially on the lines. Zimmerman was the key to the OL jelling this year and will be sorely missed, but he's the only one and Goodman on the DL. We'll lose experience in the secondary, but get back some guys who were injured. ALL the LBs are back and SCar loses theirs. Andre, Brandon, and possibly Nuk will be missed, but those are positions with much more depth. Even the kickers return, but there needs to be some serious work on the coverage teams. SCar may be loaded, but so is Clemson.

any SEC team. They are not on that level. That's not even close to correct actually. I haven't checked the entire league, but I would bet they're losing more on defense than most every if not every other team they play. And they don't have the depth of truly established SEC programs. There will be a dropoff on defense next year, and unfortunately for them defense has carried them to their 3 years (out of 8 seasons) of 'success'.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: I don't understand how you can say they are as loaded as

I heard the same thing last year when Ingram, Robertson, Gilmore, and Allen left.

We graduate a lot of guys at LB but none are big talents. They guys coming in are raw but more gifted. There may be some dropoff on D, but other than Swearinger we aren't losing anyone who isn't replaceable.
