Kickers doing the 70 thing

Sep 18, 2020, 4:52 PM

On the first punt at Wake Spiers was 3 yards deep in the end zone and the Wake receiver caught the ball at the Wake 32. What a kick--70 yards in the air.

Then one of Potter's field goals would have been good from 70 yards out (no kidding). He also went 3 for 3!! Pretty amazing start for the kickers!! I hope Dabo will let Potter try one from 70 this season. I think the NCAA record is 69 yards.

I guess you know that punts are not measured from where the punter kicks the ball, but from the line of scrimmage ....... but I'll take a 55 yard punt all day long!

Good point.

Both have shown steady improvement. Spiers has rarely had a full field to work with; because his punting has usually been situational, his net average was low; however, he has been near the top of the nation at dropping his punts inside the 20.

Glad to see him also have the BOOM capability that he rarely gets to show off.

And BT is proving that he can be a real weapon, too. In the past, if we ever went to Overtime against a strong defense, we might have been at a disadvantage in the FG game. Not anymore.

I think if we’re ever backed up to our own 1 yard line

on 4th down, we should let Potter try a 116-yarder.

I think he could make it with the wind at his back.

That’s my “applied science” nugget for the day. (if I did the math right)

Both kickers have improved greatly.

I really believe that Dabo had rather see 35 yard punt that is high and not returnable and put of D on the field than to see a 55 yarder that is returnable (as most are). Kind of the same on our punt returns where I think he had rather see us fair catch and not risk a fumble on a return so we are sure to put our O on the field, as we can score from anywhere.
