Since they had 45 yearly recruited players compared to 35 for ACC..

so i guess he also was inferring to their volume of brawn as much as to their lower academic standards..

thus: Knuckleheads.

that the ACC had academic standards (approximately 700 on SAT??)that were greater than SEC standards in those days. My memory is hazy on the details.

It was actually known as the “800 Rule” and it put the ACC

... at a distinct disadvantage for a decade ... the final decade of Frank Howard’s career.

Because the SEC accepted many great athletes who were academically ineligible to play at a Clemson, Howard took joy in calling the SEC the “Knucklehead League”.

Coach Howard was the knucklehead because He wouldn't change
with the times.
When I was there (63-67)
Frank wouldn't let the Football Team
do any weight Training and
some of players had to sneak
down to the "Cub Room" to workout.
