do you think Kennedy (the juco) will play SS next year

Apr 22, 2012, 11:33 PM

or do you think wilkerson moves over to SS? I'm not real sure what Wilkerson's better position is.

If you had to guess, as of right now, what would your lineup be for next year? I'm going with:

C - Kieboom (i don't think he is hitting well enough to leave early
1B - McGibbon
2B - Wilkerson
SS - Kennedy
3B - Baum (?, but he is in the lineup somewhere. Maybe put dunster here and put baum in LF)
LF - Boulware
CF - Brittle
RF - Slaton
DH - Best hitter remaining

Big question marks are SS, 3B, LF, and RF.

I think Wilkerson moves to shortstop...

Apr 22, 2012, 11:44 PM [ in reply to do you think Kennedy (the juco) will play SS next year ]

and Jay Baum plays second. Clemson has signed two freshman middle infielders for next year, both of whom are switch-hitters, Kevin Bradley from Pennington, NJ who's dad is the head baseball coach at Princeton and Tyler Krieger from John's Creek, Georgia who goes to Matt Campbell's HS. I think Jackson Campana, the 6'6" 220 pound guy from Providence HS in Charlotte (Richie's HS) will get every opportunity to play third. If Kieboom leaves (and his arm will make him very valuable) then either Garrett Boulware or Matthew Reed, an incoming freshman from VA will get a shot at catcher. Assuming he's back, Thomas Brittle is a lock in center field. The corners could be some of the guys already on the team (Costigan, Attanasio Slaton, or Mike Triller who's redshirting) or some of the freshmen (Andrew Cox from B-HP, Maleek Gibson from Sumter or Steven Duggar from Byrnes).

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I know that...

Apr 22, 2012, 11:34 PM [ in reply to Re: He is coming off Tommy John surgery,*** ]

but, according to Perfect Game, he was clocked at 94 mph BEFORE the surgery and usually people throw harder after the surgery because they've strengthened their arm during the rehab. He's also 19, so he'll be a draft-eligible sophomore. If it weren't for the surgery, he may not have shown up but it's highly unlikely he'll be drafted.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re:If you don't get them in your uniform, you have lost.

Apr 22, 2012, 11:58 PM

Jeff Francouer, Daniel Morris is just as bad as coming in second with Dan Mariino. Evaluate the players that you can get. I could have told you that those three were aces but it did not do us one bit of good. FB is different .Nearlly all will come to school if the can get in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I understand...

Apr 23, 2012, 12:07 AM

that if somebody doesn't show up that signing him did no good. I get that. Clemson gained nothing from signing Daniel Norris or Madison Younginer and neither of them got what he said it would take to "buy him away" from Clemson. But you say Clemson needs to sign better players then complain that the ones they sign are too good so it's a waste of time to sign them.

Apr 22, 2012, 11:18 PM

"None of the good ones will stay three years"? Huh? Do you really believe what you write? So just because Tanner "has not been disciplined for it" means it's OK? There's a reason Baseball America termed the change in the transfer rule the "Ray Tanner Rule". I guess you don't mind screwing the kids over by running them off and then making them sit out a year when they go to another D1 school. Jack Leggett doesn't do business that way and never has and never will. Even back when Clemson was "winning" he didn't do that. I will hammer you because you deserve it. But I won't call you a nasty name.

Apr 26, 2012, 11:16 PM [ in reply to Re: These guys are not getting $80k scholarships. None of ]

in his anti Ray Tanner posts. That's because Baseball fan is full of baloney when it comes to Ray Tanner.

Ray Tanner is honest, and truthful with every player he signs- and certain players are told that they will have to try out - and he tells their parents that- and their coaches that information. He does it for a select number of guys that would otherwise not get a chance to play at a school like South Carolina.

Only when the player, his parents, and his family understand that - is he willing to have them in the program.

As a result, he recruits extremely well- and has great relationships with high school baseball coaches in South Carolina.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Did he help Clemson win any games?...

Apr 22, 2012, 10:29 PM

Does the fact that he was drafted in the 12th round (in other words, not very high) make it OK that he turned down Clemson to sign with the Royals? Am I supposed to want what's best for the kids or what's best for Clemson? Just so you'll know, I don't like it when ANYBODY signs with a college and then uses it as a bargaining chip to get a bigger signing bonus. I think a signed National Letter of Intent should be considered a binding contract in that the player that signs it promises to come to school unless something tragic happens between signing day and the draft that makes it a necessity for the kid to take the money and the school that offers it guarantees him a spot on the roster unless he does something off the field that jeapordizes his enrollment.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: Did he help Clemson win any games?...

Apr 22, 2012, 11:12 PM [ in reply to Just answer the question... ]

Are you asking if a JUCO player who accepted a big bonus check instead of attending Clemson helped Clemson win games? I would hope that answer is self-evident.

And maybe I am misinterpreting, but your prior e-mails seem to state the hypothesis that if big bro went pro instead of attending Clemson that little bro should not be offered the same opportunities?

My perspective is kids have to do what is best for them and their families. Secondly, I would never condone making decisions about a kid's life based on the actions of their big brother or big sister.

I am all in for Clemson recruiting the best talent that can handle our academic standards; I am not all in blackballing talented kids ... seems a bit on the sanctimonious side.

I'm saying...

Apr 22, 2012, 11:31 PM

that with, by my count, 17 incoming freshmen and one JUCO transfer, that Clemson doesn't need to sign any more players regardless of what big brother did. And I'm not in favor of signing a bunch of kids and then running off the ones you don't want in December. To me, when a player signs with a college, that commitment is cast in stone on the part of both parties.

Apr 22, 2012, 11:52 PM

Are we starting to turn the corner based on recent run or have we been playing bad teams the past 10 days? Do we have a chance to make a run in ACC or NCAA tourneys?

2024 orange level memberbadge-donor-10yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't think age has anything to do with it...

Apr 23, 2012, 12:02 AM

because there are plenty of players in the lineup that have been around a while. Clemson starts a junior behind the plate, a sophomore at first, sophomore at second, junior at third, senior at short, junior in center and a senior DH. The corner outfield positions have been in flux. Another issue is that Clemson hasn't signed a right-handed hitting outfielder since DJ Mitchell and coach Leggett has played Baum and Boulware out there against lefties even though neither one is actually an outfielder. I think the biggest thing was that the only person that started this season at the same position he ended last season was Spencer Kieboom. Every other position on the field had a new starter. Considering the caliber of teams Clemson played early in the season, trying to win those games while also having people learn new positions on the fly was difficult. I think Clemson's results have improved recently because players have adjusted to their new positions. And Richie Shaffer, like most players, went through a hitting slump for a while although he seems to have come out of it.
