It means that their school is in the bottom tier of said conference and their school isn't good enough to stand on its own. I don't recall the top teams cheering for their conference, cos those top teams are carrying all of the other coattail riding schools in the conference.

I have a colleague who is a Vanderbilt grad. He said that he hopes we destroy Alabama. I asked him why he didn't pull for Bama since they are in the SEC. He said, "Only idiotic Gamecock fans do that, not even Vandy or KY fans are that pathetic." lol.

Listening to their inane dribble, EVERY SEC team, including the ones that you mention, are tougher than any opponent ACC, Big 10, Pac-12, or Big 12 team EVER have to face. It's because of the depth of power in the SEC that the bottom dwellers end up there, because they suffer much more injuries and grind due to the magnificent power of all the SEC teams.
In other words, pure unadulterated fresh bovine excrement.
