Wonderful to see people stepping forward with original songs about the Championship. It speaks to the impact of the game and the excitement it has generated.

It was actually written by Woody Guthrie in the month

Jan 24, 2017, 12:19 PM

after the sinking of the Clemson-class (not our Clemson) destroyer Reuben James on Oct. 31, 1941. She was escorting a convoy of U.S., Icelandic, British, and Canadian merchant ships to Britain when she was torpedoed south of Iceland. The torpedo detonated her forward magazine, splitting the ship in two. 100 men died and 45 were rescued. All 8 officers were killed and only 2 men from the forward part of the ship were rescued. After the stern sank, 2 depth charges exploded among the men in the water and on the rafts, killing or drowning dozens. She was the first American warship sunk during World War II. Guthrie was moved to write the song because most Americans simply moved on after the sinking out of fear of America joining another European war. Guthrie thought their sacrifice should be remembered and was also motivated by his left wing leanings after Germany's invasion of the USSR that summer, making the Soviets co-belligerents against the Nazis. The chorus asks "What were their names, what were their names." Well here they are:

Ship's history:

As much as I love my Tigers, I find this a bit disrespectful of the fallen.

"You ask, what is our aim? I can answer in one word: Victory. Victory at all costs—Victory in spite of all terror—Victory, however long and hard the road may be..." - Winston Churchill

Thanks for the history lesson. Certainly am thankful for their service and the men and women fighting today. The song makes more sense now
