Why do people look down on Cuse and Pitt?

Jul 16, 2012, 8:30 PM

And why do they think West Virginia is such a power? I know what WV did to our defense, but it was Kevin Steele's defense. Syracuse beat West Virginia 49-23 in October of last year and that was their third consecutive win over West Virginia. West Virginia beat Pitt 21-20. West Virginia won its last three games of the year vs Louisville, Uconn and Pitt by a total of 7 points.

Yes, this really makes our Orange Bowl debacle look worse, but it also makes it look flookish. Makes you wonder how bad things were getting under Kevin Steele. Also makes me wonder why people thing WVU is some great national power now. Heck, they have ben owned by Cuse for three years running.

Welcome to the ACC Syracuse and Pitt. Can't wait until Pitt announces they have closed the deal with the Big East.

Not true of PItt. They are a football school and what is

Michigan(both)? GT? NC State (both)? Wicconsin? Purdue (both)? WVU(has more tradition in basketball)?, Arizona?, Stanford?

Sometimes it's hard to tell.

Pitt has 2 (1937, 1976) and Cuse has 1 (1959)...

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pitt has been named national champions 17 times

Jul 16, 2012, 9:48 PM

by various publications. The University itself officially recognizes 9 of them. 1915, 1916, 1918, 1929, 1931, 1934, 1936, 1937, 1976.

It should note that the AP only started naming national champions in 1936.

Yea if we go by any selector then Princeton has 26, Yale has 18, Minnesota has 6, Penn has 6, Army has 5. Just because you have them doesn't make you relevant.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well 4 were unanimous and the 1st 8 were represented

Think about that for a minute. Thats for basketball. Plus this gives us another state to recruit once we start playing there. I think this will turn out better then people give it credit for.

Unless you're talking about PA, I'm from upstate NY and Chad Kelly type players only show up once every 5 or so years.

Their athletic history begins and ends with football.

Re: Pitt has only been relevant in basketball for 10 years

Jul 17, 2012, 12:01 AM

Pitt football ended when Pitt Stadium was torn down.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I wouldn't neccessarily say that

Jul 17, 2012, 12:16 AM

I would agree that taking the stadium off campus created some disconnect from the students, but I think the mediocrity has had a lot to do with it as well. It's not to say Pitt hasn't tried, they thought they had made some better hires than they did and of course recruiting wise using facilities with the Steelers helps.

A lot of people in Pittsburgh still care about Pitt football and if they started winning people would rally around them. College sports are a tougher sell in bigger cities where there are lots of other options, but I still get plenty of people holler at me and talk about football and talk about being excited to make a road trip down to Tigertown when they see me in my orange walking around the city. It's a pretty common thing.

There's no doubt things need to get better, but by no means is it dead.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

i'd say they both have far better fanbases than BC

Re: Why do people look down on Cuse and Pitt?

Jul 16, 2012, 9:05 PM

Cuse beating WVU was a fluke and WVU-PITT is one of the nastiest rivalry games around and are usually close affairs. Cuse has no football following and recruits joke kids from NY.

Re: They are bowl consumers. We need bowl producers.

Jul 16, 2012, 9:40 PM

WVU is a bowl producer; these other two are not. Maybe that will change with Pitt.

I'm not too concerned about Pitt - wish we'd have gone w/ WVU rather than Syracuse, though. We could always have gotten Syracuse later, if necessary (where else were they gonna go?!).

Just think - if we'd gotten WVU, our situation today would be solidified in the ACC, and instead, it's dramatically destabilized. And there does not appear to be a better place for Clemson to land at present.

Jul 16, 2012, 10:01 PM

I care about Clemson!

I acknowledge that WVU is objectionable in some ways. I think their being in the ACC would have been one of the least-objectionable alternatives, though.

I could certainly be mistaken, but I believe Clemson would be better off in an ACC with WVU than
- [Potentially] in a Big 12 with WVU, etc etc.
- In an ACC that can't compete financially
- In an SEC with LSU, etc etc.

The university presidents do care about academic reputation.

They are in charge.

We won't win that argument.

The Big 12 and SEC are FULL of schools just as bad as WVU.

Jul 16, 2012, 10:20 PM

We could either be in a stable conference with good schools plus 1 stinker (ACC+WVU), in an unstable conference with good schools (ACC w/out WVU), or in a stable conference with sorry schools (Big 12+WVU or SEC).

I'm not in favor of WVU except as a matter of survival, and the least-objectionable alternative. I certainly hope the path we've taken works out...the ACC, warts and all, is a unique idea in college sports - it's certainly worth protecting.
