Is it “groovy” to own a new VW Bug?

Dec 6, 2018, 11:51 AM

Just wondering what some of you oldtimer “Peace Train” hippies thought about that?

If you mean groovy as in you’re into doods, then yes

Not that there is anything wrong with being into doods

would agree to it, I would get a classic VW right now. Which I don't understand because she was way more a hippie than me. Did the round glasses and beads and peasant blouses, the whole bit. Man, she was something. Still is. Anyway, aside from the appeal of the spartan and simple functionality, there is just somerthing about an air cooled pancake engine. I have never seen it explained in precise terms, but if you have driven one you know. Maybe the torque is constant through the rpm range. I don't know. But its totally fun to run through the gears.

But about the New Beetle. Funny that someone mentioned 15 year old girls, because our daughter got one at age 16. Drove it through college, decided to trade up, so sold it to her formerly hippie mom. I have to tell you, aside from 'girl car' image, it is a great car. The 5 cylindar engine is fast and quick. Wide stance, handles like a sports car. From the inside it doesn't have the same feel as you expect from looking from the outside. Has 110K on it now, and we have no plans to get rid of it. Its a great car. But no, not groovy.

were very spartan on the inside, not much on the dashboard, and all of them had a manual transmission.
kinda like Jeeps were back then. Very basic machines.

I'm sure it's not like that now (haven't rode in one since I was in college the '80s). Are the engines still in the back?
