1966 is the year I entered Clemson as a married student. We had so much fun at those football games. No parking problems as we lived in the prefabs and walked to the games. Had some great players on that team. Also the begining of construction on the new library was going on. Flatt and Scruggs performed in the amphitheatre and Chuck Berry in the field house that year or 1967 I think.

God, I miss going to see our Tigers play with her!!!

Skeeter, I always thought of Buddy as more of a slasher and Bo Ruffner as the bruiser. I had several classes with Buddy and he was indeed a real stud. My bicycle riding partner was a graduate student then and he tutored Buddy, but he said he was one of the players that did not really need tutoring ......a smart guy!

Gore was a speedster called “The Conway Comet” coming out of high school. Personally, I thought Gore’s running style resembled Travis Ettiene. He was quick, fast, and ran tough.
Ray Yauger came along the next year and was another really good one.

I'm glad you mentioned Gore, he was fantastic. The stadium held 35,000 just like Wake's, you could sit anywhere you wanted on the visitor's side and a student ticket was 10 cents. They went up to 50 cents and we couldn't believe the price increase. But then I loved Elmo Lamb and Charlie Dumas and Hugh Mauldin equally as well. Thank you for bringing that up. I never dreamed the Tigers would ever become what they are now. Dabo is the greatest, right there with Danny.

Speaking of Danny Ford, I saw Alabama twice at Clemson and he was an offensive tackle and weighed 190 I think, but I remember him running full speed whenever Bear would take him in or out. And so Frank Howard, Danny Ford and Dabo all went to Alabama, even so now I can't stand Alabama.

And the best coaches were Bama grads already on staff at Clemson and promoted to HC. Hootie was an Assistant at Arkansas. Seems we got another coach from Arkansas that didn't work out so good. Stick with the Bama grads, but they have to pay their dues first!

I loved Coach Ford.One of my part time jobs was developing game film in the P & A.I would then take it to Clemson House for a coach to pickup in wee hours.Not so fast.If we lost,phone would ring well before we were done.It was Coach Ford.Y”all done with that film yet”?

I'd have to say "Hootie Ingram Days" were the worst I can remember. One year the first game was against Kentucky at Clemson, we kicked off and Doug Kotar ran it all the way back and was never touched. I noticed all 11 Tigers were on the ground

Don’t forget about Ray Yauger . I remember him as being a tough runner who had great balance .
Yauger would get hit , but instead of going down , he could put his hand on the ground and get another 3 or 4 yds.

Ray was a great football player. I was a member of the weight club when I was at Clemson and out weight room was better than the football players facility, so some of the players would come and lift with us. Ray was there a lot, but I only remembering him doing lower body exercises, especially squats ..... and he did a bunch of them with very heavy weights. Where he got his power was no secret!

Know he had the other nicknames, maybe it was Bill Goodrich that called him Bronco on the radio, regardless of what he was called he was Clemson through and through.

But Dad called him Mr. Zip because of his quickness . . . There was another back (Jackson maybe???) he called Mr. Zap because of his toughness
Instead of Thunder and Lightening . . . We had "Zip and Zap"
But I remember Buddy running over people when running past them wasn't an option!!!

I was at that game, last game of my rat season. Yelled my head off, almost lost my voice completely. Had a cooler full of beer in my Momma's big Buick for date and me. Just PBR, but still the best beers I ever had!

I gave you another TU for effort, But Coach Howard always called Buddy "Stone Hands" because he could never catch the ball. Buddy redeemed himself against nancy state in 1967. He was instrumental in getting the Tigers to wear orange shoes that day and caught a 12 yard pass in the flat from "Needle" for the go ahead score. That was one of seven for his entire career at Clemson.

and did play by play. Myrtle Beach played Conway in what I think was the last game of the 1962 season. Buddy Gore ran all over the Seahawks. As I recall, it was the final game he played for Conway.

Buddy's last season, I think, would have been 1963. He was a freshman at Clemson with me in 1964 and would have played on the JV team in '64.

I got to see Gore play when I started in '68. He was basically our entire offense IMO. We did not have a very good team then either. It was Frank Howard's final years as HC.

Clemson went 6-4 but ACC Champs in '66 & '67. Losing seasons in '68 & '69, Howard's last seasons. I started school fall of '69 and graduated in Dec '73. 5 losing seasons and 3 head coaches. It really makes me appriciate where we are now!

The coach who recruited Addison and Coach Howard met a plane and when Addison got off and when Frank saw that skinny kid, he looked at the coach and said, " If that's him, you're fired". I never knew if this was true but it makes for a good story.

That's actually the story of the assistant coach that recruited Spud Webb to NC State. Norm Sloan was the head coach and used to tell that story.

I remember listening to the games on the radio. Frank Howard ran Buddy Gore to death. Seemingly every play was a run by him with an occasional pass. He could carry the ball though.

From a 1999 look back at some of Clemson's best players......
"Aubrey “Buddy” Gore was Clemson’s greatest running back in the 1960s and perhaps during a 22 year period from 1956-78. Gore led the ACC in rushing in consecutive seasons, 1966-67, and was named the ACC Player of the Year as a junior, the first Tiger in history so honored.
Still an avid Clemson fan, who looks like he could still play today, Gore carried Clemson to the ACC Championship in 1966 and 1967. His most celebrated performance came in is last game as a junior, at South Carolina. All Gore did was rush for 189 yards in 31 tough carries, leading Clemson to a 23-12 victory. In addition to leading Clemson to the win over its arch rival, a win that gave Clemson the conference crown, he set the ACC single season rushing record and became Clemson’s first 1000-yard rusher in the process. He ended the season with 1045 yards in just 10 games.
Gore also led the ACC in rushing in 1966 when he gained 750 yards. Twice he finished in the top 20 in the nation in rushing, including a number-eight ranking in 1967. That number-eight ranking is still the second highest ranking by a Clemson running back in history. His senior year he accumulated 776 yards, the third straight year he led Clemson in rushing.
While Gore ranks only fourth in Clemson history in career rushing, it must be remembered that he played just three years and 30 games. In his era, freshmen were ineligible and teams played just 10 games per year. Only Terry Allen has a higher rushing yards per game average over a career, and Gore still holds the school mark for all-purpose running yardage for a career with a 109.1 figure.
That last item speaks volumes about his consistency, all-around abilities and productivity.
