Interesting

Nov 1, 2018, 9:44 AM

On another thread it was proposed that to coach at a high level it is necessary to have played football.
So I present to you...coaches who never played. Granted, none are just world beaters....but they coach at a high level.

David Cutcliffe
George O'Leary
Hugh Freeze
Mike Leach
Paul Johnson
Sonny Dykes
Charlie Weis
Dennis Franchione

Also, Joe Gibbs never played and Bill Belichick barely played...at a tiny little D3 school

Those coaches never played any football or didn't play in college?

It says some of them never played at any level.
Mike Leach never played at all...he was a lawyer

Yup. Leach was a leach. :)***

That is very interesting. It is also quite impressive.

I think the idea that you can't understand something if you are not a part of it is a belief that is put out there by people who want to believe that they have some special qualifications that separate them from others trying to do the same thing.

This belief may be most prevalent in baseball. The old school guys with their gut feelings are trying really hard to dispute the idea that smart guys with no high level baseball experience can use data and analytics to improve upon the game.

I think Leach fits in really well with the data and analytics guys in baseball. Most of his play calls are based off numbers and percentages on defense. He is a highly intelligent guy who has figured out how to apply that to football.

Maybe they should have played football!

I would argue that coaching at a high level should equate to winning at a high level.

One of the best OL coaches is Mario Cristobal, now at Oregon. While he was at Marshall he had one of the best OLs in the country. Not an easy task at Marshall.

He began his coaching career at Christopher Columbus HS (Miami) in 1993 as a track and field coach and a volunteer varsity football offensive line coach for six years. I know for sure he never played OL, and I believe never played FB and was a track guy. He was a teacher and volunteered because he saw a need and no one else stepped up. He was self taught and learned on the fly.

If you've never seen him on the sidelines, he's the small coach being towered over by his players.

You serious Clark? Cristobal was an all-conference OT

I think coaching is teaching. Plenty of great players cannot coach at all.
It stands to reason that a great teacher could explain it without having
played.

I do think it's important for position coaches to have playing experience. Not necessarily at the highest level but some sort of experience. There is some aspect where being able to relate to what a player will experience in game is helpful to that teaching aspect.

On the other hand being a head coach or being a coordinator and teaching a plan and managing people has little to do with in game experience.

Buzzpaw you're wrong . George O'Leary lettered for 3 years on the University of New Hampshire's football team .
He told me so after meeting him at a meeting of former Notre Dame coaches meeting .
