In response to issues like FFRF, should Clemson go private?

Apr 16, 2014, 8:08 PM

Just looking to see what people think. Please leave the torches and pitchforks at the door. Thanks.

impossible, unless the koch brothers fund it.

but a ludicrous notion, nonetheless.

I think the "College" was chartered as a land grant public institution. Thus, I don't think it could "go private". But, I am not a lawyer, but I did stay at a...

Had the same thought this morning. Not sure if it's in line

with T.G. Clemson's will or otherwise doable, but if we're only getting 10% of our revenue from the state, let's go private and tell groups like FRFF to go pound sand.

No, it's always been a state school.

Apr 16, 2014, 8:15 PM

Going private just because the football coach is religious is a ridiculous notion.

Not changing because "that's the way it's always been done"

Apr 16, 2014, 8:36 PM

is a lousy excuse.

It's probably not allowed in the school's charter however.

That's what I was saying. It's not an excuse.

OK, thought you were saying that, since we've always been

public, we shouldn't go private.

I agree that there needs to be more of a reason than just to get these FFRF idjits off our backs.

Less than 15% of our budget is paid

by the state anyway. I would like to go private but don't see it as a possibility.

I'm no lawyer, but I think it is possible for Clemson to go private, but it wouldn't be a good idea, since even 10% of the budget (the percentage the State provides) is a lot of money to give up.

Thomas Green Clemson's Will provided for Clemson to be private if the State declined to accept the gift. If the State stopped supporting the school, It strikes me that the Will would kick in and the school would go private.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

isn't the small % they pay "not supporting"?***

I was not aware that the will contained such language, but I appreciate the contribution everyone has offered. I need to go find a copy of the will online. Just a curiosity thing.

The Clemson board would like nothing

Apr 16, 2014, 9:22 PM

Better. And if you have about $500mm lying around to get our endowment to 1B, they can vote to do it Friday.

I'm working on it as we speak. Just a few hundred million more. Stand by your computers.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Why?

Apr 16, 2014, 10:12 PM

There's no need to. That's just giving in.

Re: Why?

Apr 16, 2014, 10:36 PM

Many of the other ACC institutions are private and it does not hurt them athletically and gives them better autonomy over academics and research. But, it is a big chunk of revenue lost that needs to be found somewhere if a move like that were to be considered.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

If we went private then the players can go all Union
