In-State vs Out-of-State Recruiting

Mar 8, 2016, 8:51 PM

On message boards, a common refrain among Gamecock fans is that Dabo and Company are ignoring in-state players and focusing more on high-caliber out-of-state prospects (the horror!). Indeed, the Clemson staff is recruiting at a nationally elite level, landing five-star and upper four-star players from Florida, Georgia, North Carolina, Virginia, Maryland, and even Massachusetts. It has almost become expected of the Tigers to land prestigious classes.

However, the state of South Carolina has simply failed to produce an abundance of elite prospects in the past few years. So, instead of waiting for the next Marcus Lattimore or Jadaveon Clowney, Coach Dabo has filled in the gap with out-of-state studs. Nevertheless, almost as a matter of psychological desperation, these particular Gamecocks fans comfort themselves by asserting that Clemson's more national recruiting footprint will backfire once Dabo misses on his targets, while allowing "BOOM" Muschamp to lock down the state's borders for the long haul.

Here's the thing: this state does not produce a large quantity of top talent on a consistent basis, unlike California, Florida, Texas, Georgia, Ohio, or Louisiana. The Real USC, LSU, UGA, and the three Florida schools can focus primarily on their respective states and cherry-pick the nation. On the other hand, schools like Tennessee, Clemson, Oklahoma, and Ole Miss must focus nationally while selectively attending to their individual states if they want excellent classes.

Will Clemson's national focus backfire on us? Maybe. However, how can Gamecocks say so with confidence, especially considering their own situation? Recall that, from circa 2008 to 2011 (give or take a year or two), the Palmetto State had an abnormal surge in amazing players such as Lattimore, Clowney, Gilmore, Hollomon, Jeffery, and others. The school in Columbia, to its credit, took full of advantage of this bumper crop and entered a glory period on the field. Unfortunately, as soon as the pool of in-state talent became shallow, their program instantly fell to pieces. On the other hand, because Clemson had long developed recruiting ties in other states, the Tigers were able to sustain success and even improve upon it during the same period!

So which school's recruiting strategy backfired?

If we solely focused on the state of SC for our recruiting we wouldn't be better than 8-4 every year. If we lose a recruit to them because the HS coach has a stick up his ### about us recruiting nationally we will probably have some one just as good on the roster.

I never waste time watching, nor listening to, what the coots think. We are doing just fine with our strategy, and we have been doing just fine since the day this school opened it's doors (even though they were the chosen ones early on). They are "wannabes", and that is pretty much all they ever will be. Pay no attention to their drivel. They have no status, and at the rate they are going, things won't change.
Life is good!

Re: In-State vs Out-of-State Recruiting

Mar 8, 2016, 9:25 PM

Yeah, we have no success with players like Ben Boulware, Kelly Bryant, Gage Cervenka, LaSamuel Davis, Kaleb Chalmers, Marcus Edmonds, CJ Fuller, Taylor Hearn, Albert Huggins, Denzel Johnson, Kendall Joseph, Charone Peak, Eric McLain, Hunter Renfrow, Cannon Smith, Cordrea Tankersly, Mike Williams, and Jalen Williams.

Add in Feaster and Simpson from this year and we are doing just fine in state. We have a great mix. Those idiots are delusional and are constantly looking for excuses to make themselves feel better. We will continue to get the top talent in state, especially as our name continues to grow on a national level.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I believe where it changes is with some of those

Mar 9, 2016, 10:36 AM

big names that where on a mission to get out of the state have to take a long look at Clemson as opposed to bolting to UGA, TN, Michigan, FSU....and now we have been taking our cut of those very schools instate talent and more the past few years.

This year in the state of of Tennessee is awesome, in particular. I have never seen that state have so much top talent, will never happen again in my lifetime and we are loading up like no other... return on the Hatfield/Bowden years in one class.

I love it!

I think a lot of that will be answered if we get Higgins and Robinson and then Ortre smith wants to commit. Not sure if we would take him to be honest. He's a stud but if we say we're full then were full. Especially with a Devon Hunter hopefully coming to us.

And before anyone says CB for smith we will hopefully have Jamyest and Deon jones on board too.

Also a lot hinges on Xavier Thomas. He could jump start scars recruiting or let us stay incredibly dominate in state.

Mar 8, 2016, 9:56 PM

And I'm sure that Dabo and company are smart enough to keep the high school coaches in the loop on their strategy. Those guys are your key and as long as they don't feel like their players are being ignored we'll be fine. They know we aren't passing on SC kids to take equal or worse kids from some other state. They see we are taking kids that are just better than some of the SC kids.

If you recruit just the best players in S.C. in football you will be out of a job pretty quickly. The talent base and level of that talent just isn't there with states like North Carolina, Georgia, Alabama, Florida, etc., etc., in the Southeast.

Re: In-State vs Out-of-State Recruiting

The 2017 class is well on the way to being our third straight top 5 haul. We are now in a position to be very selective in who we offer and ultimately take. We won't ignore the state if the talent is in our own backyard but will not hesitate to look elsewhere if it's not.

So what are you saying

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

In state recruiting

Mar 8, 2016, 11:01 PM

In the 2017 cycle Clemson has offered 4 in state players, a TE, 2 WR, and DB. Clemson has taken a out of state WR that they liked better than one of the in state WR, the TE committed to USC last summer, Clemson will go to the wire with the other two.

When a staff looks at player in high school they asked themselves two things is he better than what we currently have or as good, if the answer is no then they offer a player who is as good.

South Carolina has no choice but to recruit in state, because they can't compete for top talent out of state. Everytime Clemson has won at a high level they've gotten top talent from NC, FL, GA, and South Carolina. The fact is the state Of South Carolina rarely produces top OL, QB, and LB Clemson has to out of state to get them. Look at this year in state they're no in state OL, QB, DE, DT,CB, or LB better than what is already on campus. Clemson has no choice, but to go out of state to get better or stay the same. USC is so down in talent they can afford to take a lot lower talent than Clemson and not degrade their talent.

At the end of the day Clemson will get nost of the high level talent in state.

Re: In-State vs Out-of-State Recruiting

Mar 8, 2016, 11:35 PM

They're arguing over an unranked player with South Carolina being his only Power 5 offer that I see. He may end up being a great player, Ben Boulware wasn't thought very highly of until his senior year and the Under Armour All-American game. Saying that Clemson is "burning bridges" by going after national talent is just stupid though. Going after James Robinson IV, Tee Huggins, and Amari Rodgers may hurt us a little in the eyes of OrTre Smith, for example, but even if Clemson offers in two months before signing day, we have more to offer at this point than South Carolina does, so closing on a recruit wouldn't be a problem. Just look at Isaiah Simmons... I follow recruiting a decent amount and I had not even really heard of the guy, except seeing his name on the top 200/300 boards, next thing you know he has an offer and he's committting.

Recruiting on a national level vs. only locally is the difference between snagging Christian Wilkins late in 2015 and Simmons late in 2016 and a team realizing you missed on a recruit so you sign on a local kid with offers from FCS schools.

Trying to justify your own team and their recruiting by saying we are "burning bridges" by targeting out of state players is just dumb. Alabama gets guys from all over and they still pretty much sweep the state of Alabama for any deserving talent too.

Re: In-State vs Out-of-State Recruiting

Mar 9, 2016, 6:57 AM

Like I have said many times SC's run was due in part to the state of SC was loaded then with High School talent. That all grew up Gamecock fans. Plus none of that talent could get into Clemson. Coach Swinney knows what he is doing with recruiting I understand why he brings in 2 stars and 3 stars also evaluation by espn and rivals is not the only thing to go by when recruiting. Remember Football is 65% mental and 90% talent. If all you have on your team is 4 and 5 stars you have a lot of kids that didn't have to work hard and were doted on a lot in High School and they get a little lazy gotta have those 2 and 3 stars that work hard because a 2 and 3 star high school kids in there 5th year of college are 6 stars and the leaders of your team. Plus it seams he hits the mark on preferred walk on's they seam to make our receiving corps dang good makes the really good players realize they have to work hard also.

usuc's strategy has backfired in a big way, so much so that their "Hall of Fame" coach and savior Steve Otis Spurrier left mid season in a cloud of shame for himself, for their fans, for the players on their team, et.al. In desparation they turned to muschump, who, at best, is a weak and incapable replacement, and at worst is a guy on the verge of "going postal" on someone. This show is going to put The Jerry Springer Show in a back seat. It will be fun to watch, though.
