Dems control House _ so negotiations and compromise

Mar 22, 2020, 7:11 PM

is required. Any and every time there is split control of government, this is the way it goes.

Not surprising .... shouldn’t get anyone out of sorts. The leaders of both parties need to get together and figure it out. The process is called democracy and separation of powers _ kind of what the ole USA was founded on. It may take a few days or weeks but it will get done.

if they wait weeks we'll be in a depression

Mar 22, 2020, 7:40 PM

It'll make the Great Recession look like a summer vacation. A pleasant break from normal.

Don’t worry, next Democratic admin will pull us out of the recession as per usual. This one wasn’t pubs fault of course but they aren’t equipped or experience to handle this.

Not trying to flame or be dismissive. First the Senate is ..

is Republican controlled. It should be a piece of cake compared to the Democratic controlled House.

Second, historically when have the Democrats been reluctant to spend money. When spending trillions, they just got to shuffle a few hundred billion this way or that way. The corporate bail outs just need refinement to ensure pay back and employee financial security. Democrats will buy in to big spending.

Finally it is not likely that there will be a big bucket of “unspecified funding” that will be discretionary for the administration. It is Congress’s responsibility to appropriates funds not the executive branch. Negotiations will likely yield a smaller bucket with restrictions and accountability.

Both parties in Congress need to do their job ... similar to what has been done for almost 250 years.

I lean towards being fiscal conservative and the National debt is a longer term concern. What will really be contentious is figuring out how to pay for this.

Negotiations, compromise and bipartisanship to the Dems

There's no way either side has the right answer to how

much this is going to require or how to appropriate everything today. Would rather they go in tranche fashion for what they do agree on that's immediate, then move on to other systemic and down-the-road issues in a few following rounds as more comes into focus and remedies become more apparent.

Both sides are guilty of chasing headlines and wins. Address immediate cash flow crunches and credit protections to keep the mechanism going, and instill confidence, then spend some more time figuring out what's going to do the most good. The larger the budget, the larger percentage that will go to waste.

I agree. I wrote this on facebook yesterday

The Senate is panicking and rushing a stimulus package that will be ill-considered an ineffective. Why don't the give everyone a check for $500 to get us through the next week or so. Then they could take the time to make sure the longer term stimulus bill, truly worked for everyone.

If they want this to help the poor, hourly wage earners, small businesses and larger corporations (with strings), they need the time to consider all of their options and make sure they cover all of their bases.

Don't blow this because you allowed yourselves to get in a rush.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You have to be joking. The senate is a legislative graveyard,

Mar 22, 2020, 7:28 PM

Democrats aren’t the party that’s blocking

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I'm surprised they dint agree today.

Mar 22, 2020, 7:55 PM

and sounds like some house dems wanna harrumph a lil because only Pelosi and Schumer were Dems in the loop. But I hope Dems and Pubs realize that a deal must be done quick, and compromise is essential. Dems writing their own whole new bill is a huge waste of time.

The Republican package is slanted towards the wealthy corporations and without the needed provisions for the newly unemployed workers. Hopefullt, the Dem will stick to their guns to put together a reasonable package. Taking a few extra days to get it right will not hurt nearly as bad as getting it wrong.

I am pleased to see some people here understanding that there is often this kind of give & take in crafting a bill this important.

This bill is way to vague on items and I do not favor bailing out companies that spent the same as they are asking for over the past 5 years in stock buybacks and high C-Suite pay. So if it takes longer so be it, 2008 the fat cats got bailed out , this time the little guys should get help. Screw the C-Suite suits and their bloared salary.

Mar 22, 2020, 9:34 PM

They're fighting a $500 billion slush fund that we'll be controlled by the Treasury Dept. Steve Mnuchin refuses to say who will get the money. It is an unprecedented money grab to bail out Wall St. losses. A fund of this sort has never been created. Democrats won't sign off on it until they're told who the half Trillion will go to.

We don't have time for that sort of nonsense. Not in a crisis like this. American's need money. $1.8 Trillion budget but only $250 Billion actually going to Americans. Remember TARP where all the money went to bailout corporations and Wall St. and American's lost their #####? They don't want to see that happen again. It's not the government's money it's the taxpayer's money and they should be the ones receiving it.

That's what the Dems are fighting for.

I employ 300 if we're making this a d***-measuring contest. And Felix is right, it's a disaster of an idea.

And your point about Trump trying to compromise is pure fantasy.
