Right after Purnell left for DePaul, there were 2 candidates I thought

Would be homerun hires, while also being reasonably likely to come to clemson (if we had offered them the job). They were...
- Buzz Williams (Now at VT, was at Marquette back then) - Lon Kruger (Now at Oklahoma, was at UNLV back then)
Williams made 5 NCAA Tournament appearances, with 2 Sweet 16 appearances and 1 Elite 8 appearance. He was 69-39 at Marquette. He almost immediately turned Virginia Tech around when he arrived, going 20-15 in his 2nd year with the Hokies, and is coaching arguably the best team of his 3 year career with VT.
Kruger was 161-71 at UNLV, with a Sweet 16 & NCAA 2nd Round appearance. Last year at OU, he led the team to the final four, and the sweet 16 during the year prior. He's made the big dance 4 times at OU. He's 2 wins away from 600 all-time wins as a HC.
Can you imagine if we had hired one of those guys instead of Brownell?? We'd have multiple NCAA tournament appearances.

Williams went to VT, a program with equal-to or less than the same amount of basketball "tradition" as us. In fact, at the time OP departed, Clemson would have been a much better job than VT.
Kruger would have been tougher to snag, but not a reach by any means. OU had a good run during the Blake & Taylor Griffin era, but faded to mediocrity after they left for the NBA. Kruger has always been a great developer of talent, which he proved during last year's Final Four run. Clemson was about equal to OU at the time, in terms of prestige of the program. In fact, clemson might have even had an edge, considering we play in the ACC.

Thank god we didn't end up with Rick Stansbury from Miss St, I'd say we dodged a bullet "missing out" on him. The year after we considered hiring him, he won just 17 games. The following year, he won 20 games, but was upset in the 1st round of the NIT. He then "retired" (much like Tommy Bowden), yet went to A&M as an assistant a year later. He's now the HC at Western Kentucky.
Capel is another major coaching blunder that we avoided. After OU's Elite 8 appearance, Capel was caught with an ineligible player in his lineup, forcing their mere 13 wins that season to be vacated. The year after that, he won just 14 games. It would have been a terrible mistake to hire him.

No no no. Indiana is a basketball Blue-blood. He recruits at an elite level because he coaches at Indiana. The program itself attracts the talent, not Tom Crean. I'd even say he's been a disappointment at IU, considering the amount of talent he's had there

Huh? He rebuilt that program from nothing

If people think OP left the Clemson cupboard bare, they need to look at what Crean started with at IU. He then built the program back to get to 3 sweet 16s, has won 2 (I think) B1G championships and a couple coach of the year awards.

Only thing is Crean is married to Jim Harbaugh's sister. Can Clemson nation handle having a Harbaugh in our family? Lol
