Elton John says the next tour is his last.

Jan 24, 2018, 7:07 PM

Some of you may recall we got free tix a couple yrs ago to see him in Roanoke. A waitress approached us as we finished our meal about 7:40 and said another patron had asked her to give away 2 tix for the 8:00 show. We changed our plans for a Walmart trip.

Anyways, pop or not, he’s awesome and you should go if you get the chance.

Madman Across the Water one of the greatest albums

ever and I'd love to see him if he only played his early stuff but don't know if I could sit through Island Girl and Philadelphia Freedom.

agree with all you said. Chose not to buy tix for the show I

Jan 24, 2018, 8:45 PM

saw for that sentiment. However, he put on a highly polished, professional show with his long-time band which he put much effort into, was not "mailed in". He did play many songs that were not my favorite early album cuts, but they were quite good live, including Philadelphia Freedom etc. I have said here, and will say again, of all pop music stars, Elton's pop is my fav. I guess because I liked his early stuff first. In this show, he did play all the old classics, some obscure old ones, and many of the later radio-pop hits. But it was all good.

Yep.

Jan 25, 2018, 8:40 AM [ in reply to Best early album of his ]

And that's saying something considering the sheer volume of excellent work he's turned out. Sure, he became a more of a pop hit machine as time wore on, but he turned out nine completely classic records before starting down that road with Rock Of The Westies.

Tumbleweed Connection at the Revco in the old Rock Hill Mall on Cherry Rd...in '70 or '71. Still to this day, My Father's Gun from that record remains my all time favorite Elton John song, and right up there with The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down in terms of songs using Civil War imagery. Legend has it that he has not performed the song since doing it for his 17-11-70 live album in '71. I've never seen him live, which is one of the glaring holes in my resume, so I might very well have to make an effort if this is going to be the last tour.

farewell tour once every 2-3 years. Kind of reminds me of back when I worked in sporting goods decades ago. Our store was in the newly-built Outlet Mall beside Carowinds (now Cabela's) and the day the mall opened, the sock store close to the entrance put up a GOING OUT OF BUSINESS STORE-WIDE CLEARANCE banner that stayed up for about 15 years or so.

If I remember, The Stones Steel Wheels tour in Clemson

was also going to be their last.

in 1988.

badge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I think that was more public opinion.

Jan 25, 2018, 9:27 AM

The Stones had been on a 7 year hiatus and there were acrimonious feelings among the band members. The perception was that it would be their last, but it was never marketed that way. A lot of that idea came from Keith Richards' VERY pointed solo release Talk Is Cheap the year before the Steel Wheels tour started.

I saw the show in Raleigh with Living Colour opening, and it was absolutely freaking STELLAR.

I think the feelings of the Stones in that era are best

Jan 25, 2018, 9:38 AM

summed up in lyrical form:

Button your lip baby
Button your coat
Let's go out dancing
Go for the throat
Let's bury the hatchet
Wipe out the past
Make love together
Stay on the path
You're not the only one
With mixed emotions
You're not the only ship
Adrift on this ocean
This coming and going
Is driving me nuts
This to-ing and fro-ing
Is hurting my guts
Get off the fence now
You're creasing your butt
Life is a party
Let's get out and strut
You're not the only one
With mixed emotions
You're not the only ship
Adrift on this ocean
You're not the only one
That's feeling lonesome
You're not the only one
With mixed emotions
You're not the only one
You're not the only one
Let's grab the world
By the scruff of the neck
And drink it down deeply
And love it to death
So button your lip, baby
Button your coat
Let's go out dancing
Let's rock 'n' roll yeah
You're not the only one
With mixed emotions
You're not the only ship
Adrift on this ocean
You're not the only one
That's feeling lonesome
You're not the only one
With mixed emotions
Mixed emotions
You're not the only one
You're not the only one (x#3)
