If GT came with FSU & Clemson to make 13 who is your #14?

May 29, 2012, 4:57 PM

Assuming ND, UNC, UVA, VT, and NC State are off the table.

Who do you pick as #14?

Louisville
Maryland
Miami
Pitt
USF or UCF?
A small draw southern school like USM or ECU simply to have another southern team?

Curious about your thoughts.

Initially, I'd recommend

Miami.......but with whats been going on down there the last year or so, its difficult to assess whats gonna happen to them with the NCAA and, additionally, what stringent safeguards they'll apply to themselves in the wake of this most recent scandal.

Louisville, maybe??

I think it depends on the $$$ the school will bring in, or whatever sport they want them for.

From that list, Louisville without a doubt***

Reasoning?

May 29, 2012, 5:03 PM

Not arguing for or against. Do you have history with them or is it another school in an SEC state or what?

Re: Reasoning?

May 29, 2012, 5:22 PM

My reasoning...

Great Bball Program (Top facility in the nation right now)

Football still has a fairly new stadium that seats 50k with room to grow.

Baseball was top 25 some this year.

Soccer is also a top flight program.

IMO they add more than the others.

clemson, fsu and wvu would cry foul about the big12 adding unc or uva, given the recent and not-so-recent history.

that being said, if ncsu and vt are off the table:
miami - already have the florida tv market, but they're a good "brand name". football is about to tank due to ncaa trouble.
maryland - awful football, decent bball. good tv market.
pitt - i would think wvu already gives the pittsburgh tv market to the big12. they don't add much in football either.
louisville - indifferent.

i'd have to go with miami, even with the ncaa baggage. they would be a lot less likely to water down big12 football like maryland or pitt would.

Miami

Louisville

May 29, 2012, 5:19 PM

Huge athletic department revenues, has had quality football in the past and is committed to the sport (recent renovations/expansion of the stadium), rabid fan base, great basketball, geographic proximity to Clemson (about the same distance as it is to UVA), and a quality media market.

Personally, I think Miami's glory days are over. Their facilities stink, their fan support is awful, and the NCAA is going to hammer them. Those waiting for a Miami resurgence are going to be disappointed, IMO.

Virginia Tech would by my top choice....

Teams like Louisville, USF or UCF would be WAY, WAY, WAY down the list of potential candidates.

Louisville then Miami. They seem to have more of a commitment to football than Miami, and you don't know what's going to happen to Miami after the NCAA gets through with them.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

out of those: 1. Miami for the money; 2. Maryland for old

May 29, 2012, 8:19 PM

times sake; 3. Pitt for the backyard brawl; 4. Louisville for basketball and bourbon. It would make absolutely no sense to bring any of those other, directional schools into a major conferrence - the Big 12 would be better off with 13...

Regardless of what may happen to them, Miami is still a team people will turn the channel for. A 7-win U garners more football interest than a 9-win Louisville or Marland.

I know you said NC State was not available, but my question would be if the SEC took Va Tech and UNC why would NC State not make a better football pick that Maryland. Eventually if the Big 12 went to 16 I think you would be much more relaxed knowing your pod would be from Tallahassee to Raleigh with Clemson and Atlanta in between. The Big 12 could add Pitt and Louisville to get to 16.
Louisville, WVU, Pitt, I.S.U.
Kansas, KState, Oklahoma, Ok.St
Baylor, Texas, TCU, Texas Tech
FSU, GaTech, Clemson, NC State

But if you can't have NC State then Maryland over Miami.
