So who represents the SEC in the playoff if Bama loses?
Dec 3, 2014, 10:18 AM
|
|
1. Bama 2. Miss State 3. Ole Miss 4. UGA 5. Mizzou 6. Auburn 7. LSU
I'll go with Auburn ... the playoff committee loves them some Gus Malzahn.

I don't see it...putting them in over conference champions

with fewer losses? Highly, highly doubt it.
They will be the highest ranked two-loss team, and the highest-ranked team who doesn't win a conference championship (considering TCU and Baylor co-champions). But that won't be enough unless more upsets happen Saturday.

Is there any precedent whatsoever for

a team who didn't win a conference championship being ranked above a major conference champion, who has fewer losses?
Why would people think this would happen?

Except a bunch of week-by-week rankings that don't have any importance except as message board fodder.

Bama wasn't ranked ahead of someone with fewer losses.

Well, it's one of the two conditions.
Dec 3, 2014, 10:49 AM
|
|
That they weren't a conference champion. The other half is for them to have more losses than the major conference champion they were ranked ahead of.

with 2 losses, like Wisconsin or Georgia Tech. I don't doubt that for a second.

"rules". From week to week, they are starting afresh and saying "who are the best teams". I like that, though I don't always agree with their rankings, including where they have FSU now.

especially when you listen to the Committee Chair, Jeff Long, try to explain the basis for the rankings.

They seem determined to keep an $EC team in the top 4
Dec 3, 2014, 11:05 AM

They also seem to punish some teams when the margin of victory isn't as large as some think it should have been while overlooking narrow victories by other teams.

If Bama loses they won't have a leg to stand on.

Conference champion? No Better record? No Head-to-head win against anyone else in the picture? No
Missouri also won't be jumping up 12? spots to crack the top 4 at 10-2 so the SEC will almost certainly get left out in that scenario. I think it would take major chaos to change that.

True if Bama loses the SEC won't be in the playoffs.
Likewise if FSU loses the ACC won't either.

You could be right...

but the nation would flip out if Bama loses and still ends up at #4. There are plenty of scenarios where it could happen, but they would need Wisky to beat OSU, Baylor to lose to K-State and Arizona lose to Oregon....which is all possible.
It would be something if Arizona actually got in. They beat Oregon, FSU loses to Tech, Baylor and OSU lose and they've got to be in.

Pretty insane to have a 2 loss team in there

Especially one that would have losses to two teams from its own conference that probably won't end up in the top 10 (I don't expect Miss. St. to finish in the top 10, because they're going to lose if they come up against a team with any defense in a bowl).
