So who represents the SEC in the playoff if Bama loses?

Dec 3, 2014, 10:18 AM

1. Bama
2. Miss State
3. Ole Miss
4. UGA
5. Mizzou
6. Auburn
7. LSU

I'll go with Auburn ... the playoff committee loves them some Gus Malzahn.

2024 white level memberbadge-donor-05yr.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The Committee will not drop Bama out of the top 4 IMO

Dec 3, 2014, 10:20 AM

Unless, of couse, Bama ends-up getting completely blown-out which I do not forsee happening.

I don't see it...putting them in over conference champions

Dec 3, 2014, 10:22 AM

with fewer losses? Highly, highly doubt it.

They will be the highest ranked two-loss team, and the highest-ranked team who doesn't win a conference championship (considering TCU and Baylor co-champions). But that won't be enough unless more upsets happen Saturday.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Is there any precedent whatsoever for

Dec 3, 2014, 10:29 AM

a team who didn't win a conference championship being ranked above a major conference champion, who has fewer losses?

Why would people think this would happen?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The CFP poll moved Bama ....

Dec 3, 2014, 10:35 AM [ in reply to I don't see it...putting them in over conference champions ]

from 5th (week 12) to 1st (week 13) in one weeks time.

No way they drop Bama from the top 4 even after another loss as long as it's a close loss.

Well, that would be highly, highly unprecedented.***

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Would it? I mean precedent hasn't been set has it?

Dec 3, 2014, 10:42 AM

This is the first year of the committee and playoffs.

Umm...nothing has happened yet.

Dec 3, 2014, 10:43 AM

Except a bunch of week-by-week rankings that don't have any importance except as message board fodder.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Never mind, read your post wrong.

Dec 3, 2014, 10:43 AM [ in reply to Would it? I mean precedent hasn't been set has it? ]

I don't know of any precedent, under any system, where something like that has happened.

Bama/LSU for the MNC comes to mind...***

Bama wasn't ranked ahead of someone with fewer losses.

Dec 3, 2014, 10:46 AM

Correct?

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Ok, so it only fits MOST of your criteria from above.***

Well, it's one of the two conditions.

Dec 3, 2014, 10:49 AM

That they weren't a conference champion. The other half is for them to have more losses than the major conference champion they were ranked ahead of.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I do think they would be ranked above conference champions

Dec 3, 2014, 10:50 AM

with 2 losses, like Wisconsin or Georgia Tech. I don't doubt that for a second.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I don't doubt that either and I honestly think BAMA is again

Dec 3, 2014, 10:53 AM

the best team in the land. And I fully expect them to manhandle mizzoo this weekend.

Nothing is unprecedented with the CFP Committee

Dec 3, 2014, 10:43 AM [ in reply to Well, that would be highly, highly unprecedented.*** ]

They appear to be making-up the rules as they go along to suit their agenda.

What I like about it is that they don't appear to have

Dec 3, 2014, 10:45 AM

"rules". From week to week, they are starting afresh and saying "who are the best teams". I like that, though I don't always agree with their rankings, including where they have FSU now.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

It looks to me like they have an agenda....

Dec 3, 2014, 10:56 AM

especially when you listen to the Committee Chair, Jeff Long, try to explain the basis for the rankings.

Dec 3, 2014, 10:56 AM

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

They seem determined to keep an $EC team in the top 4

Dec 3, 2014, 11:05 AM

They also seem to punish some teams when the margin of victory isn't as large as some think it should have been while overlooking narrow victories by other teams.

If Bama loses they won't have a leg to stand on.

Dec 3, 2014, 10:31 AM [ in reply to The Committee will not drop Bama out of the top 4 IMO ]

Conference champion? No
Better record? No
Head-to-head win against anyone else in the picture? No

Missouri also won't be jumping up 12? spots to crack the top 4 at 10-2 so the SEC will almost certainly get left out in that scenario. I think it would take major chaos to change that.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: If Bama loses they won't have a leg to stand on.

Dec 3, 2014, 10:33 AM

True if Bama loses the SEC won't be in the playoffs.

Likewise if FSU loses the ACC won't either.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

You could be right...

Dec 3, 2014, 11:03 AM [ in reply to The Committee will not drop Bama out of the top 4 IMO ]

but the nation would flip out if Bama loses and still ends up at #4. There are plenty of scenarios where it could happen, but they would need Wisky to beat OSU, Baylor to lose to K-State and Arizona lose to Oregon....which is all possible.

It would be something if Arizona actually got in. They beat Oregon, FSU loses to Tech, Baylor and OSU lose and they've got to be in.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Pretty insane to have a 2 loss team in there

Dec 3, 2014, 11:11 AM [ in reply to The Committee will not drop Bama out of the top 4 IMO ]

Especially one that would have losses to two teams from its own conference that probably won't end up in the top 10 (I don't expect Miss. St. to finish in the top 10, because they're going to lose if they come up against a team with any defense in a bowl).
