Anybody ever watch the TV series Gunsmoke? Somebody must, because it's still on TV and it's the best thing I can find to watch on a rainy vacation day.

If so, did you realize Marshall Matt Dillon (James Arness) was 6'-7". That's a full inch taller than TL16.

He and Peter Graves were brothers. Radio Matt was William Conrad. Had the voice but not the looks for Matt on tv

His brother Peter was the main character on the tv series Mission Impossible..the movie spin off cam from the series.

And perhaps his greatest role....Captain Clarence Oveur.

Both James and Peter served during WWII - James in the Army - 3rd ID receiving a Purple Heart among other medals - and Peter in the Army Air Force...

My father was a Captain in the same Division and perhaps the same Brigade as Arness, although I don’t know if they ever met. They both fought in North Africa, Sicily and at Anzio.

James Arness also played the creepy alien in "The Thing From Outer Space," an excellent early '50s Sci-Fi thriller.

I thought that was Finebaum. No wait he's the modern day creepy alien

John Wayne turned down the role of Marshall Matt Dillon, opting to continue his career on the big screen, but recommended his friend Arness, who he had worked with on the movie set.

Re: Gunsmoke

I think John Wayne was considered for the first Dirty Harry role, but then a much younger Clint Eastwood got it. Good thing, too. Clint did that role to perfection in 5 movies.

Loved John Wayne the actor. Too bad in real life he was a white supremacist.

Re: Gunsmoke

How long has it been since there was an A list actor out there that you could really respect? I've got some respect for Clint, but it is qualified. I've got some for Norris, but I dont consider him an A lister.

I've got to go to the bathroom really, really bad so I am probably missing someone - you guys fill in the blanks

Chuck Connors is one of only 13 people to play professional baseball and professional basketball. He played for both the Chicago Cubs and the Boston Celtics.

The reason Chester Goode walked with an exaggerated stiff legged limp and Festus walked bow-legged with jangling spurs was to detract from James Arness’s slight limp. He was wounded in the leg during WWII.

James Arness was seriously wounded in the leg at Anzio, Italy. He was the tallest man on their landing craft at 6-7, and they didn't know how deep the water was when landing. Since he was the tallest, he was the first one in the water. He was hospitalized for a long time recovering from his wound, and he began studying acting.

Gunsmoke was the best TV show ever. I don't waste my electricity on today's TV trash.

You are 100% correct my friend.....they don’t make shows like that anymore......Gunsmoke and Seinfeld are the two best shows of all time with nothing else coming close to them.....everything on tv now is total crap with their political correctness because they are afraid they might hurt someone’s feelings ......nothing but garbage on now and I don’t waste my time on any of it.....Go Tigers!!!!!

love Gunsmoke, particularly the black and white episodes with Festus. My last two dogs were named Festus and Chester.

Andy Griffith b/w episodes are right up there with Gunsmoke in my opinion.

Arness was a hero in WWII

[2]

He killed a bunch of German soldiers in a bunker at Anzio and won a bronze star. He also received a Purple Heart. He was quoted as saying that because of his height he was sent off the landing craft first to test the depth of the water.

Of old shows I enjoyed watching that had a “short cast” and McHale’s Navy came to mind.

No tall guys in that bunch; Joe Flynn, Ernest Borgnine, and Tim Conway may have been diminutive in stature but they were giants in comedy!

Locally you can pick up Gunsmoke on Saturdays at 1 PM on ME TV at channel 4.2 I look forward to the Saturday Westerns when football is over... And if you like old Horror movies with a touch of corn, try Svengoolie at 8 PM... HA! (OH!! Don't forget Lynda Carter as WONDER WOMAN at 7, right after the 3 Stooges)... How is that for hijacking a thread...?

As a kid, I loved Paladin. Now, I realize most of the plots were weird or silly. Paladin was cool, but the writing was poor.

Also have the gun James Aeneas used in Gunsmoke. I always laughed at the way it looked like they were trying to throw the bullet out the end of the barrel not realizing they all used single action shooters for realism. That’s in Buffalo Bill’s Museum of the West.

The character Festus actually started on an episode of Have Gun Will Travel. His body odor was so bad that Paladin made him walk down wind. Really was a funny episode.

Thank the Lort Leave It to Beaver wasn’t airing that day at that time slot. Otherwise I’d be... Beaver Brown.
