Arik Gilbert

I know we don’t really go after transfers but I really think we need to take a hard look and consider taking this kid. He Is a freak of nature and going to be a beast TE. I think he just got swept up in the LSU hype last year and found out he didn’t liked it like he thought. I didn’t see any character issues or getting in trouble. He could come in and make immediate impact imo. We were in his finalist so he liked us and we liked him. so really hope Dabo and staff give this kid consideration and take him if he wants to come. I know we don’t really get transfers but I think he’s one to take. NFL talent written all over him. Go Tigers!!

I think Dabo needs to reevaluate his stance on transfers....

Not saying he needs to rely on them, but with the transfer portal and it's popularity I personally believe that Dabo could strategically utilize the portal along with evaluating the kid's character and "fit" for our program.
IMO we need a top notch SAFETY from the portal............but I wouldn't complain about taking Arik Gilbert

There’s a difference between the highest rated TE ever who’s proven in college and the top rated TE of a class. Briningstool is a great pickup and I’m super excited but it doesn’t hurt bringing in Gilbert as a transfer with 4 years of eligibility left and that’s the point being made.

We always have a great tight end we get. We use us them sporadically. We get another the next year. Rinse and repeat. It just isnt a position I worry about

Not sure he's a Clemson man but I may be wrong

and we recruited him before he opted to attend LSU.
Under the circumstances, wouldn't seem to be any real harm revisiting the issue just to see if there is still mutual interest.
I think you'll see Georgia and Florida make really hard pushes for this kid.

I think he meant that Ark was going to show up Turner and Zanders. Gilbert is beast.

No transfer portal for me until we get to a point in our program where we have to use it. If we had 2 or 3 TE’s transfer that would be one thing. Gilbert had the opportunity to be All In, he chose his path and has to live with the consequences. It’s a honor to wear the paw and we need to stick to Dabo’s strategy of utilizing the guys who want to be here

I don't necessarily think we should be slinking around in the bushes trying to lure some of these guys to Clemson but if aomebody like Gilbert, or the Olineman from Tennessee were to reach out to us I don't see how its some kind of negative impact on the program if we are comfortable with them as a person and have a need at their position. Seems totally counterproductive to dismiss players like these out of hand, especially when literally every other team in college football is playing this game.

moreso than TE right now.
Safety and interior OL would be my preference. But not sure any are available.

Correct. There’s not a safety available in the portal that would result in an upgrade for us.

According to another paysite, Clemson reached out to Gilbert but he wasn't interested. TIFWIW.

I would be shocked if he came to Clemson

We haven't shown a true commitment to aggressively getting the ball to our TE's over the years. We really attacked the defense with players like Leggett his senior year Dwayne Allen is Senior and Jr years, but that's only 2 guys in 10 seasons.
This year, was decent as the TE group accounted for 15.8% of the receiving yards, but Brandon Galloway only had 27 catches for 369 yards (both less than Travis Etienne). He should have been targeted a lot more IMO. He's too big for corners, too fast for LB's to cover. It would have been a match up nightmare for defenses, every game, yet we never used him as much as we should have. It's like we're scared to throw anything towards the middle of the field.
Last 2 years was worse as TE groups production was worse as it only accounted for 4.1% of the yards receiving in 2019 and 3.9% in 2018. Granted, we haven't have great TE's, but what great TE's are going to come here when they only get 5-7% of the passing attempts as a whole and are sharing the field with 3-4 others all the time?

Every time I saw Galloway running with the ball this year there was a piano chasing him. He’s really slowed down.

Anyone who is 6'5" looks slow

he covers much more ground than it looks. Further, most TE's get lined up against TE's, unless they are out in the slot.
Lastly, doesn't matter his speed, if the scheme is good, and he's finding wide open spaces (think the big play vs LSU) those plays are gonna go for 10, 15, 20+ yards more times than not.

Eventually Dabo will sign a transfer. Arik Gilbert would be a great choice to be the first.
Whoever gets this guy will be very fortunate. He is crazy good.

We don’t even use the TEs we got.
Dabo has said it time and time again...He’s committed to the players he’s got...so we are committed to guys who will never see the field consistently like Blackston, Ennius, or Chalk

I’d love this buy because he could line up at WR, too. That being said, looking like he’s a gator.

Personally, I think Ajou Ajou can fill the role that Gilbert would and we already have him.

We don't know about Ajou yet

plus, if Ajou becomes legit, we could play them at the same time in 4-receiver sets.
Gilbert can play slot or outside in addition to TE. He's that versatile.
One other thing: Ajou and Gilbert are completely different players. Watch the way they run and move on the field.

My son and I were talking about the TEs during last few games. When we watch other TEs on other teams after they catch the ball they are looking to run over a tackler. We would see the Tigers's TEs that were not that physical after the catch. Most TEs are looking to truck someone at the end of their run but ours just don't look that aggressive.
