Name all the bars that no longer exist..I'll start-Tiger Den

This has probably been done before, but I didn't see it.
Also, Bars that still exist but might have a different name now, TTT used to be Red Carpet Lounge.
And Is anyone out there that remembers and can confirm that the Red Carpet had Go-Go dancers in 70 and 71?

Genoa Club, $1 vodka Sunday nights During summer school. That was the place!
What was the name of the place that was around back underneath Ibrahim‘s and I think Jeff Davis was the bouncer there for a while.

The Bookstore was great. They had country music night on Wednesdays I think. They would also cash $10.00 personal checks. My parents just thought I was buying school supplies.

I remember when the Producers played the free concert in the amphitheater on first Friday. I think it was fall of 88?! I still have one of their cassettes and loved those guys. Such great power pop slash new wave back then.
The following year it was 24/7 Spyz, but that night was so memorable because we heard and met Follow for Now at TD’s. Those kids were awesome! I saw them at least another half a dozen times in Charleston and Columbia. Their lead singer, songwriter, guitarist was the amazing David Ryan Harris who now plays with John Mayer as well as a bunch of other people. He’s freaking amazing! His debut album was incredible!

Brothers Deli in the mid 80's. Very friendly to underaged crowd if you stayed in the backroom with the pool tables and had someone old enough to bring back the pitchers.

I played in a band called Last Train Outta Town in the early 80s (graduated 1982) and we played Four Paws several times. We played several bars around town but 4 Paws was always packed with a great crowd!

Red actually started the Tiger Den and then Lester Moore bought it from him before going on to own half the bars downtown at one point or another. Because of Lester's success, Red considered himself the grandfather of the bar industry around Clemson.

I loved reading all the threads. Great memories of the 80's. It may warm your heart to know that I was in Sloan Street Tap Room back in March. Jimmy Howard was there, and absolutely nothing has changed about the place, including the popcorn.

As you can tell from my avatar, I loved Lester's Tiger Den. Out there every Thursday night drinking and playing pinball. Predictably, attendance at Friday morning classes was pretty sketchy. Made the mistake of cutting Knox Landers' class one Friday, and he had a no-cut policy (in the 70s you could do that). The office meeting to beg my way back into his class did not go well. Only thing that saved me was that he was frequently out at Lester's drinking beer too.

Who owns it now?
I remember when Nick sold it to the biology professor and his wife, what was his name, Dr. Wagner?
I remember eating and drinking in there with Dr. Server. Man that guy was awesome! But then there were so many awesome people at Clemson back then.
Dr. Server and Chip Egan were my two favorite professors.

the places that you could walk to from campus, the Tiger Den out on 123 was also known as Lester’s Tiger Den, or more commonly just “Lesters”, owned and sometimes operated by a good ol boy named Lester Woods. One of the first foosball machines in this part of the country...Go Tigers!

Does anyone remember the time 2 inebriated fraternity brothers left Lester's in a pick up but tried to exit through the field and the railroad tracks instead of the road. Truck got stuck on tracks and was hit by a train. They did not get hurt but lets say they were in a little trouble . I lived in the apartments above Lester's and man that was a loud wreck .

Drank quite a few Bass Ales at Rip Rocks but the Barrell Tavern was home base. You knew your pool game was on when you were controlling both tables at Barrell. Shelly from Jersey kept the Natty Light draft flowing

Four Paws .... Was that the place that was around back on the bottom floor? Was super dark inside and had a model train on the track around the ceiling?
One night we were in there and saw The Deadly Crank Dogs playing werewolves of London! Those guys were killer!

Never darkened the doors, but it intrigued me - it was located out on 93 headed to Central I recall. Also, College Station had those $5 pitchers of Long Island Iced Tea and free happy hour popcorn.

Yes, Red Carpet had a few plus 10 cent draft on certain Thursday nights. Used to eat Penrose sausage and drink beer at Lester's ( Tiger Den). Took dates to the Bengal Huddle under Lester's. They were some mighty fine drinking establishments.

Also in the old Mini Mall. Used to be multiple theaters in Clemson. Don't recall if all were open at the same time. I have seen movies in them all. Not aware of any theaters in town now.

I remember The Bengal Huddle. I loaned the owner many of my 45s so I’d have great songs to shag to. No shagging allowed upstairs at Lester’s Tiger Den! LOL

Oh, yeah! I was in school at the time. Visited the RCL a couple of times for the dancers but wasn't much to it, to be honest. Most of my visits to RCL were for lunch.

Old local asked us for a ride home from Betty's Lounge. Dropped him off at a small house in the woods. Told us to follow him out back, he had an entire covered truck bed filled with jars of moonshine. Gave us a few for bringing him home. Betty's Lounge was a classic.

The Gold Nugget is now Nick's. Upstairs from there was a place called the Attic. Played a lot of Foosball there. They would have different beer from others at the time. Andecker, Red Cap Ale, Hamm's among some of the choices.

Before Whirl converted the back of the convenience store into the dance floor the place wouldn't hold hardly anybody and he had gotten into trouble with the fire marshal. He started serving beer off the deck and there would be more people in the parking lot than in the bar until he let everybody in at 12 for sing-a-long. But sing-a-long was on Friday nights at 12. They had to close at 12 on Saturday's back then.

Not to disparage TXPullen, but I remember the dancers. Might have been the fall of 1972, but they was one girl that danced topless, with pasties I think, for a couple of weekends. Don't recall what shut down the dancing- may have been a city ordinance. But it was a packed house for a couple of weekends.

Being a Clemson local and grad I was around the bar scene for quite a few years in the 70's and 80's. It was 18 to drink which meant 16 with an ID would fly. Didn't want to get off topic but another poster opened the door regarding a fight involving Curtis Whitley. I met Curtis at Nepal's in Greenville around 1990 and yes, he had a short fuse and was not someone to engage. But oh, that was the tip of iceberg. The football players and wrestlers (wrestlers were the worst) were constantly involved in fights during 70-85 time frame. Some of the more sadistic were bouncers who would delight in beating the #### out of a 150 lb. drunken patron and hurling them into the parking lot (the Corporation was bad for this). Once saw a famous CU linebacker pin his GF against the wall in the alley beside TTT. He had one hand around her throat and she was about a foot off the ground. A couple drunks happened down the sidewalk and began to protest - Mr. LB wheeled around and said "do you want some of this"? Why no, they made the lifesaving decision to move along and the lovers quarrel apparently ended without any punches thrown. Point being that the players of today are so well mannered, polite, respectful, and would seldom think of initiating a bar fight against someone 100 lbs. lighter. Miss those good ole days but appreciate the manners and civility that the Clemson athlete of today exhibits under most circumstances.

Wow!!!
Talk about a gross exaggeration and stereotypes and painting with a broad brush!!!
So a few bad people mean everyone is bad?
OK Got it!
I was at Clemson 84-88 and good friends with the wrestling team. My roommate my senior year and after college was a wrestler. Yes. Those guys are definitely wired differently and there were a few that got into fights and trouble, but in general you will never meet a nicer group of guys and some of them were even members of the Calhoun college honors program.
I went to a lot of wrestling parties also went to a lot of soccer parties because I was good friends with most of the soccer team. We had some crazy guys on the soccer team back then and their parties were just as wild as the wrestling parties.
My two best friends played football during that time and I would have also had it not been for a car accident in high school. I knew most of the football team. Yes. A few of those guys got in trouble too. But again most of those guys were fantastic also.
You’re talking about guys in college. Randomly pick any group of guys college-age and you got a find a handful that are violent and graphic and I get into a lot of trouble. It’s human nature. It’s part of the beast. But you take a few people and paint the entire group by those few people’s actions.
You know what none of those guys back then were doing? Slamming their ex-coach on social media. Slamming Clemson and wanting to rename buildings. None of them got arrested for armed robbery and for breaking into other football players apartments after leaving the football team. You know that just happened a few years ago right?
So back in the 80s I knew guys on the swim team, the soccer team, pretty much every athletic team that were jerks and troublemakers. I knew everyone on the soccer team and the wrestling team and almost everyone on the football team. I also knew plenty of regular students that were jerks and troublemakers.
And contrary to what you tried to paint in your post human nature hasn’t changed since the 80s. Not every football player for Dabo has been a virtuous person And the entire football team isn’t this virtuous collective. What is different is social media and a marketing department that does a fantastic job market in Clemson players and the program Dabo has built. Don’t get me wrong, I love what we have, I love Dabo, I love what we’re doing as a program, but the good is getting magnified today, but that doesn’t mean there hasn’t been some bad. You are trying to make it sound like the football team back then was out of control and they were all bad people but today they’re a bunch of saints. That’s just total nonsense!
Also, I didn’t grow up there, but I was there often in the 70s and I was in school in the 80s and Dr. Harder Was a family friend,, Col. Jordan Was a family friend, I had a family member that was a professor, so I had a long time ties to the university besides just being an average student and I was very close to many athletes across the board. As well as members of the administration. So I’ve got a pretty good image of what Clemson was then and what it is today.

Getting close to all of them. Marshall Feimster from TTT opened a bar on in the little strip mall on highway 123 right before it goes under highway 93. The name was "Marshall's" and it had a late night crowd with 2 pool tables. About 1983. Mac Martin then purchased the bar from Marshall and it continued on a couple more years as "Mac's".

The go-go dancers were there.
Lester's Tiger Den had .10 Bud Draft beer from 8:00am until noon. By 2:00pm on weekdays it was like Mardi Gras inside there.
My favorite was the old Study Hall.

The Joint. Short lived, but quite the happening in its lifespan. Hosted solid local bands like Barney’s Jive Band, and Marlon’s Way... brought in the Dirty Dozen Brass Band one time... even had a Ralph Nader rally.
