I was at game - what did announcers say about the “targeting

It was shocking how bad that call was.

angle it might look like Simmons helmet made contact. He did bob his head forward at the smae time as his hand slapped the helmet. Obviously he wasn't anywhere close and luckily the booth saw that.

You don't need helmet to helmet contact

for targeting on a defenseless player. All it takes is forceable contact to the head/neck area. It was a bogus call because his hand contact with the receiver's helmet was incidental while he swatting at the ball.

If the refs aren’t going to call it DBs should start hitting the WRs in the head every catch play.

It’s definutely an effective strategy.

your dbs would have to be close enough to slap the helmet yet not holding on for deer life

You should give your official score prediction now before you say anything else this week. That way T-net members can know if you are realistic or delusional about anything you say this week.

yes or no, did you think it was targeting?***

It’s an interesting one because it doesn’t match what you usually see in targeting.

But by definition it probably was targeting. But like I said if I was a DB I would use it if they’re not going to call it.

Except for the fact DBs would start breaking hands, wrist, and arms. If you think slapping at someones helmet is going to bother them more than you, then you haven't played much.

Nov 18, 2018, 12:56 PM [ in reply to It was beyond terrible, but I could see how,at a certain ]

Him doesn’t matter(it clearly didn’t). Any forcible contact to head or neck area on a defenseless player is targeting. He wasn’t defenseless and it wasn’t forcible and that is why it was correctly overturned.

Re: the fact of whether Simmons helmet hit

Nov 19, 2018, 4:30 PM

The receiver was absolutely defenseless by rule. The contact wasn’t forcible though.

A receiver in the process of making a catch and immediately after making a catch is explicitly defined in the targeting rule as a defenseless player.

They were arguing that one could create “forceable contact” with your hand, so it *could* still technically be targeting.

Maybe everyone on defense can start wearing foam gloves on their hands now. That might even stop defensive holding. That ref was just terrible. During time outs he didn't go talk to the other refs, he talked to Coach Cutcliff all night. He was the same one that called pass interference on a deflected pass and was told to pick up his flag. He wasn't that far from the deflected pass. Just another example of the ACC's finest wearing the stripes.

In answer to your question...
The announcers agreed that it was a bad call and it was not "targeting".
I can't recall if they reached out to their network referee for his input - I think they did but won't swear buy it; but the general consensus of the announcers was that it was NOT targeting.

Nov 18, 2018, 2:02 PM

No they thought it was targeting bc they didn’t know the actual rule. They thought if u made any kind of contact to the head that it was targeting. Atleast that’s what I remember but I was on beer #7 so I could be wrong.

Nov 18, 2018, 2:07 PM

Announcers concluded. They agreed no targeting but the targeting rule is any forcible contact to head or neck on defenseless player- which would include Simmons hand if he actually had hit him hard enough and was ruled defenseless
