I think the 2018 playoffs are going to be the reason

it goes to 8 teams. the Big 12 and Pac 12 have been swimming in mediocrity for years now but it appears next year will be their best years in quite some time. USC, Washington, OU, UT, and OKst could all make a serious run at the playoffs. SEC will of course only have alabama, ACC will have CU or FSU (assuming they beat alabama...highly unlikely) carry the banner again, and B10 will be OSU, PSU or (cough) Meechigan. If we end up with 5+ 1 or 0 loss teams there's going to be a ton of angry people all over the country. I have a feeling that next year is going to be the first year that is going to happen

But we will still have to wait for a while for current 4 team playoff ESPN contract to expire.

I hope not, I'm fine with 4 teams. The semi-finals have been wretched the last 2 years. Can you imagine if Bama had played Wisconsin or Colorado? It seems like for the most part the cream rises to the top. And I like the idea of the regular season games being so important. I could live with 6 teams, but not 8

The problem with 6 is the bye and the injuries avoided/extra practice time for the teams with a bye.

So you feel an 8th best team has the right to play #1 and possibly win a title with 3 losses?
I think 4 is plenty no matter the drama between 4-6.

Yes, Top 8. And this year was the exception, the Top 8 teams

have been 2 loss or fewer for the past several years.
2008 has only 1 loss or 0 loss teams in the Top 8, plus a 12-0 Boise St. at #9.
2007 had a 3 loss Oklahoma at #7.
Since the 2001 season (furthest ESPN would go), only 2 teams with 3 losses have been in the Top 8 in the final poll before bowl season...
So yes, Top 8.

The point is to get best 2 teams into the playoff. Having a 4 team playoff does that without destroying the product. Current format ensures the top two teams play each other in either a semi final (2014 bama-OSU) or the final (CU-Bama). How could expanding the playoff field improve upon that?

The CFP system got the two best teams in the final the last two years

I think that the first year that Clemson is just outside the top 4 and on the outside looking in, almost everyone on this board will suddenly decide that an 8 team playoff is really what is needed. FWIW I'm already in favor of an 8 team playoff.

In defense of 4 teams, it has worked out well with the exception of 2014...which could be debated regardless. My reasoning is that it looks like more teams are starting to gain ground on Alabama and Clemson. I think its better safe than sorry to have the extra teams. At least the Big 12 has a championship game now to clearly define which team is the best.

just win your conference championship without getting manhandled in the regular season (psu) and you're in.
