Would this team be better running Oliver Purnell's style?

Forgot we had a game last night(which happens more and more these last 11 years), so my opinion is not informed by that showing. However, given that we have a full roster for the first time under Brownell and appear to lack the skill to run Brownell's slow down style(again), should we go to a more up tempo, pressing team and allow our long bench to benefit us? We have some athleticism, but not a lot of skill.
Can Coach Brownell adapt his style to the players he has? I've not seen much evidence that he can. Remember his first team with all OP players? He started out trying to force them to adapt to his style and we struggled early. He started using more of the OP approach in the second half of the season and we got better and made the tournament with all OP players.
Would we be better off with OP's style - running and pressing a lot more, given the roster we have?

The best way for Clemson to be competitive is to recruit athletes and press-we saw it with Purnell. Brownell likes to run clock and play d to keep games close...not fun to watch and not the recipe for success at Clemson at all.

a good defensive team under Brownell. We are a consistently poor perimeter defensive team under Coach B.

Depth will be our biggest strength. We are young, and young teams normally struggle in the half court. We need to create easy buckets, and pressure can do that. Dont have to go full court for 40 minutes like OP, but extend pressure and trap in the half court mixed with some full court stuff. We are long and we do have athletes. It honestly looks like an OP team physically

We only had 1 assist at the point guard position.

That doesn't bode well for a half court offense.

We have to create turnovers for easy baskets. Last night was the first time we really haven't done that fairly well

but equally as raw. Moore is more of a wing. Tyson is also a perimeter player. Baehre should help at 4.
Other than Jemison though, we dont have anyone who would be classified as a legit big. Hopefully Baehre can step up, but I look for him to be rusty starting out. He hasnt played since March 2018

I don't see how running off to Chicago would help this team?

It's obvious that "Clemson" style of low possession, methodical play ain't going to work. The "style" only works IF everybody is a real good shooter, all shots. Missing layups is not a good shooter.
Soooooo, lace up the Chuck Taylor's tight and run 'em out of the gym ! If you can't beat 'em shooting, might as well winding them to submission.

*No*
The "Havoc" defense has been cracked and a LOT of kids now have grown up playing against some form of it and most coaches can adapt to it. That is why a lot of the old OP/Shaka disciples are struggling and it isn't seen as much. Basically if you took OP from 2008, he would be a 10-20 coach in 2019, not a 20-10 coach. However, 15 years ago, it was the new adaptation. Now, applying it in very specific situations (like in a scoring drought) might not be a bad idea to get a chance at a few layups.
However, I agree with you that our perimeter defense has been extremely poor. That is a MAJOR problem.
Finally, I played pick up with Vernon back in the day. OP didn't just recruit athletes but rather defensive specialists that were under recruited. Vernon was an unreal skill player but without a Tanner-level shooting threat. But back in 2000, defensive guys were undervalued so getting them into a non-blue blood program was easier. Now, they are valued a LOT more (see UVA) and are tougher to land.

But we must pressure the ball more. I understand not doing so with so many sidelined, but when they're back, I dont see any way we can just pack it in as we are now with only 8 healthy guys

I think that, until we have a healthy roster.....

It’s hard to expect this team to do a lot of pressing currently. We did well with it in the TCU game for a few minutes, but that is not sustainable for a full game. Yesterday we were without 4 contributors....and both prospective ‘2 guard’ starters were out. Just not enough depth at the moment. Also...we are very thin down low...and sometimes the press leads to more fouls for big guys at the end of the break. That being said, once we are healthy...I’d like to see it more than just the last couple of minutes when we are down 10. I kind of think of it like a blitz in football....not needed every down, but picking the right time to bring the house is important.

Let's look at this. Purnell ran a 2 bigman set with James Mayes and Booker. Running a high ball screen offense with flashing down low. Brad doesn't recruit big men. He is guard oriented so we can't try if we wanted due to poor recruiting down low. And poor progression of talent.

For that matter what did he accomplish in the postseason (includes ACC tourney and NCAA) in his fairly lengthy tenure?
I'll wait by my computer.

I stopped following basketball at Clemson and in general following one & done and Brownell’s hire. It’s just a lower level of ball, with a boring Brownell twist, compared to the Jordan’s, Worthy’s, Bias’ and hundreds more I watched play in Littlejohn back in the day.

A few remarks.

1. We don’t have a full roster. We only had 8 scholarship players available against Minnesota. 2. A lack of depth (due to injuries and, to a lesser extent, youth) makes it even riskier to play at a faster pace). 3. Brad adapts to his personnel. He isn’t married to the slow pace, but he’s had to do that at times to compensate for a lack of talent and/or a lack of bodies. 4. Brad would like to play more up-tempo with this team, as our athleticism lends itself to that. You won’t see a lot of full court pressing (although you will see some), but you will see plenty of trapping. On offense, you’ll still see a lot of ball screens and motion, but also a team that gets out and runs when possible. Quick shots won’t be as discouraged as in the past. 5. I don’t think OP’s approach would work well for this team, or for just about any team these days in major college basketball. There is a reason OP is no longer coaching, and his coaching tree isn’t exactly having much success lately.
