I think our defense is going to be much improved. Sometimes

Jul 2, 2012, 5:08 PM

all it takes is a change. The other night on the Big Ten Network they were saying how Michigan's defense in 2010 was one of the worst in the nation. They even gave up 52 points to Miss. State in a Gator Bowl loss. In 2011, the first year under a new staff, Michigan improved its points per game average by 20 points a game!

Now if you shave off 20 points per game, then your offense has a lot more time on the field and your offensive point totals go up too.

Michigan's improvement on defense can be sourced to their different approach to offense....they went away from Rodriguez' fast-huddle spread offense and back to the more traditional Michigan pro-style offense. Averaged 5 more minutes per game on time of possession despite playing 100 less offensive plays in 2011 compared to 2012. And scored slightly more points too...

The Mich. defense had 120 less total tackles in '11 than in '10 (861 vs 984) because they were on the field less per game (opponents total plays: 963 in '10 vs. only 803 in '11). This meant that they were fresher later in games, and later in the season.

Will Clemson's offense keep the defense off the field? Will Clemson's defense be able to stay fresh late in the season?

the time, our defense being on the field longer was their own fault. Although they did cut their time on the field down a lot by giving up a lot of quick long-strike scores and long drives that to no time.

All we had to do was learn to tackle, get off block and

teach a linebacker what his job was.

But that was all...

I jest. You're spot on. Basic stuff, just couldn't get it done.

hopefully Venables is smart not to have all 7 guys playing man with a mobile QB. I broke at least 3 remotes last season where we would get burned on a 3rd an long because all our defenders had their backs to the QB.

I agree. I think that Dabo has put together a great staff that will demand more from the players. I can't wait to see the Tigers play.

I hope it improves too. Kind of hard not to.
