I just saw that the Senate failed to advance the Cornivirus bill again

Mar 23, 2020, 2:24 PM

What's the reason for that again?

From the Fox News article, Sen. Schumer seems to be

Mar 23, 2020, 2:51 PM

at least doing something right:

"Meanwhile, Schumer, who said he was “hopeful” the Senate would get something done Monday, left the Senate floor to continue negotiations with the White House and Senate Republicans."

That is the correct course of action. And I'm sure others will join him when they are done "raging".

If not, why would a different vote be expected? Get in a room and work out the differences. Don't come up for air until it's done.

Re: Pelosi and Schumer want the Senate bill killed so she

Mar 23, 2020, 5:25 PM

T3 I don't know how you come to your conclusions based on the article you included.

It seems to me that McConnell tried to ram through a Republican Bill and Schumer and Pelosi stopped him because it didn't provide enough help to the workers and too much help (with no controls figured in) to corporations and CEOs.

Now, I am not saying the Dems are saints - but the original bill was seriously flawed and biased towards the rich.

Bills are often involved in this give and take - and in the posturing that we are seeing here.
I would only hope that both sides are willing to negotiate fairly to get to a reasonable compromise.

Taking an extra few days will be better than passing a flawed bill that doesn't adequately help those most vulnerable in this crisis.

Mar 23, 2020, 2:40 PM

That the best work is not done when rushed. Senators and Representatives should take a deep breath, calm down the emotional rhetoric, and work hard together to craft a good bill acceptable to all. Trying to do something as quickly as possible is not usually the correct course. Our system of government is designed to try to prevent emotional and knee-jerk laws.

They'll get something passed, and soon.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

The reason you know this political gamesmanship

Mar 23, 2020, 2:44 PM

Is that it's not productive toward passing a bill. If someone votes "No," calling them names won't make them change to "Yes". What will get them to change to "Yes" is to talk to them, listen to their concerns, and either convince them that the existing bill is sufficient for those concerns, or modifying the bill to address them, or a combination of both (most likely). But that doesn't get them on TV as effectively.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Well first I'd just like to point out the irony of saying

Mar 23, 2020, 3:43 PM

"The Democrats are being partisan!"

Secondly, what's happening now is by Mitch McConnell's own design. "Republicans are in the majority in the Senate. We wanted to put forward our proposal. We feel like we have an obligation to do that as a majority and the Democrats, of course, need to be given an opportunity to react to it." This is the Democrats reacting to it.

Lastly I'm not sure what House relief legislation you're referring to. Seems weird to have a 90-8-2 vote in the house where there's over 400 members, but maybe I'm missing something.

Mar 23, 2020, 3:54 PM

House Dems and the Trump administration. So it was bipartisan from the start, as opposed to what we have here which, again, McConnell openly said the majority party was writing their own bill and the Democrats could answer. Perhaps they should have worked on it together like the House did with Trump. Probably would've been more productive than this shit show.

T3,
I think this is a bit more complex than tit-for-tat. maybe we could discuss what the Dems want that you think is so outrageous, rather than just saying - its our turn to write the next bill.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

it isn't complex at all

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Wait, so is that the same bill that Rep Gohmert held up?

Mar 23, 2020, 4:04 PM [ in reply to Re: Well first I'd just like to point out the irony of saying ]

Apparently he was one of 40 Republicans who voted against the original House bill.

And this explains why the full House didn't vote on it: "Gohmert was able to hold it up because if one member stands in opposition, the House can't send the bill to the Senate without bringing the entire House back to Washington for a vote. The Senate is in session this week, but schedules have been fluid because of the coronavirus outbreak."

So Republicans held the House bill hostage? This almost seems hypocritical!

Even moderate West Virginia Democrat Joe Manchin lashed out at the Republicans over the lack of controls on the Exchange Stabilization Fund.

“It’s throwing caution to the wind for the average person working on Main Street, it’s balls to the walls for the people working on Wall Street,” Manchin declared. “It’s the same ol’ story from Mitch McConnell.”

It’s just a disgrace the Dems are blocking this.
This money put into the economy will level things out until all is back to some kind of normal.
There are people that haven’t worked in 2 weeks and need this money.
Just like the impeachment the Dems are showing how stupid they really are.

I’m not saying the dems aren’t playing a little politics here...but glad Moscow Mitch is getting a little of his own medicine. They all just need to sit down (6ft apart) and compromise. If both sides end up disappointed then that’s a win for us IMO.
