Clemson ranked #1 - football RPI

Oct 3, 2018, 10:25 AM

RPI - Relative Power Index - is a simple mathematical term which ultimately became so controversial that basketball no longer uses it. Why was it controversial? Not because it was shown to be wrong, but rather, because it didn't give the results that the leaders of the biggest conferences wanted to see.

Something tells me they won't like this result either...

Rank School RPI SOS Conf.
1 Clemson 50.46 57.43 ACC
2 Alabama 50.41 53.79 SEC
3 Georgia 49.97 55.1 SEC
4 LSU 48.43 60.4 SEC
5 Ohio State 48.43 51.76 B1G
6 Notre Dame 48.4 62.1 Indp
7 Oklahoma 47.85 50.02 XII
8 Stanford 45.93 64 PAC
9 Penn State 44.94 55.59 B1G
10 Washington 44.19 57.7 PAC
11 Auburn 43.72 53.45 SEC
12 UCF 43.65 43.51 AAC
13 Wisconsin 42.58 52.95 B1G
14 Miami (FL) 42.22 55.09 ACC
15 West Virginia 41.17 49.01 XII

Are the Clemson Tigers REALLY the #1 team in the nation and we just didn't know about it? Maybe. More likely this is an example of why the NCAA stopped using RPI for selecting tournament teams... still, it's fun to see Clemson on top of Alabama, isn't it?

I have to disagree on this one. Basketball RPI was

archaic and in the last decade some savvy coaches and ADs figured out how to exploit the ratings by scheduling certain games to (in essence) artificially boost their RPI. There are much, much better college basketball metrics available now (KenPom for example) so it was really time for RPI to go IMO.

I assume college football RPI uses the same formula which is just 25% winning %, 50% opp winning %, and 25% opp opp winning %. Notice absolutely nothing else is factored into that except wins and losses and all wins and losses are treated equally.

This paragraph from the RPI wikipedia page sums it well:

The RPI lacks theoretical justification from a statistical standpoint. Other ranking systems which include the margin of victory of games played or other statistics in addition to the win/loss results have been shown to be a better predictor of the outcomes of future games. However, because the margin of victory has been manipulated in the past by teams or individuals in the context of gambling, the RPI can be used to mitigate motivation for such manipulation.

It's basically a poor ratings system that was used because margin of victory 1) hurts people's feelings, and 2) scares commissioners and such because of it's relation to gambling lines. However, MOV (or at least some statistical reflection of what actually transpired in a game beyond who won and who lost) has been proven to be an integral part of any good ratings system.

I agree. BTW, most of the more accurate computer ranking methods have the Tigers around 4th or 5th - for example, FPI has Clemson 5th, while Massey's composite ranking puts Clemson into a virtual tie with LSU for 4th/5th.

Surprisingly, S&P+ has Clemson 2nd right now***

This post is somewhat coot-ish. Playoff committee doesn’t use RPi and if they did, would there be need for a committee? Also coot-ish because you’re making light of a point that no one cares about or used to measure football teams.
