Things were so different in the early ‘50s. My father-in-law was Buck George, the Catawba Indian, who spent the spring semester of his high school senior year living with a Clemson assistant coach so that he could work out with the varsity. Try that today...

eventually wound up in Washington, D.C., where I had a chance to meet him during a trip there while at Clemson.
Several Editors of "The Tiger," including me, attended a national collegiate newspaper conference in 1966, and Senator Thurmond, a Clemson alumnus, arranged for Breedin to host us while there. He arranged a number of special passes, escorted us around the city, and all the while related tidbits about Clemson's history. That's when I first heard of the early 50's controversy about the bowl game.
And that controversy eventually led to the S.C. General Assembly enacting legislation that required Clemson and South Carolina to play their game the next year. Contrary to popular opinion, the law only mandated that game in defiance to the So Con rule. The formation of the ACC was the eventual by-product.

Brings back memories from those days a year after I graduated. Years later Coach Howard and I sat together on a flight from Raleigh to Washington, DC. He was talking about some of the problems in evaluating recruits and told me about signing Glenn Smith. Coach said that he was recruiting a running back who he “just had to have”. The only way he could sign the runner was to take Glenn as a package deal. Howard said,” you ain’t never heard of the running back, have you?”
