I can't believe I'm actually considering this, but

Apr 2, 2020, 12:37 PM

I am thinking strongly about getting chickens.

With all of this virus stuff going on I've been looking for ways to be more self sufficient as a family.

Putting in the garden.

Planting fruit trees.

Making my own corn whiskey.

Naturally we are going to need some protein. Hence, chickens.

Those of you who have chickens, what do I need to know? What's your set up.

We have foxes and snakes around here so how do I protect my investment?

They normally roost in trees but you can train them to roost in a coop if you like.

mainly we have earth snakes from the pond. I'm sure though as soon as we get chickens we will be getting all kinds of different kinds.

I'm more worried about the foxes that screech in the woods at night.

But they didn't last long. They were killed by hawks, coons, and neighbor dogs.

Even with a fully enclosed fence, the coons was able to get in.

I loved it. They were free-range in our backyard during the day and hung out in their coop at night. They had plenty of cover and a screened-in deck to go under for protection.

Got 2 fresh eggs every morning, which was awesome.

They became pretty domesticated. My wife would sit in a chair in the middle of the yard and they would walk up to her and lift their wings up so she could pick them up. They would sit in her lap and sleep.

Only draw-back was them pooping on the deck.

We ended up having to get rid of them when my wife broke her ankle during an ice storm. I was traveling a lot and she couldn't get in the yard to fill their water/food.

We also raised 3 ducks until they got too big to keep in the yard and we set them free on a duck pond.

In fact, we just bought 4 chicks this weekend. We're raising in our dog's travel kennel in the garage. We plan to give them away when they outgrow the cage.

Apr 2, 2020, 2:56 PM

I could regale you with stories of our chickens, but you've probably heard them all before.

We're probably going to get some again. Wife and kids keep bugging me, and to be honest, nearly zero effort was required. For guineas, literally zero effort. After all of our chickens died, we had a single guinea that hung around for like 2 years with no food, or anything. It would pal around with our cats all day.

backyardchickens.com is a great resource.

Keep the rooster's spurs cut.

You'll see more snakes around due to the eggs.

Don't wash the eggs or refrigerate them, just leave them out on the counter. They'll last FOREVER like that.

Re: I can't believe I'm actually considering this, but

Apr 2, 2020, 3:19 PM

I've done meat chickens and egg chickens. If you buy day-old chicks, don't underestimate the ability of a racoon to get them. I lost about 30 in 2 nights by a coon pulling them thru a 1" wire cage. Just shreaded them and pulled them out a piece at a time. Meet chickens are pretty easy if you can stomach processing them yourself. We never had major problems with snakes, but random stray dogs can be an issue.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Just don't let them cross the road.
