I can't imagine many non-SEC teams have played back-to-back top 10 SEC opponents.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Exactly. How many chances have there been?

Aug 26, 2013, 4:35 PM

Not like a lot of OOC competition occurs

Isn't this our 3rd top ten SEC opponent in a row. Surely there are a decent amount of non-SEC conference teams to have faced 2 too 10 SEC opponents in a row.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Yes it is, but it is an anomaly.

Aug 27, 2013, 10:54 AM

Not many teams play 3 consecutive games against non-conference opponents from the same conference.

I'd like to see when the last time a team played two top 10 SEC teams in a single season. That'd be interesting.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I can think of twice we came close

Aug 26, 2013, 4:55 PM

2003 with UGA nd Tenn (but UGA was 11)
And last year with USC and LSU (but USC was 12)

Re: I can think of twice we came close

True. I think we're one of the few teams in the nation with a locked-in SEC opponent (Georgia Tech, FSU and Louisville being the others--though it's not like Kentucky has ever been good).

I just did a tid-bit of research and Florida State has played 2 top-10 SEC teams twice (3 times if you include A&M, but it was 1991, so I didn't). In 1990, they lost @ #5 Auburn and then beat #6 Florida. In 1998 they beat #4 Florida and then lost to #1 Tennessee.

Other than that, I think you'll be hard-pressed to see a team who has played two Top 10 SEC teams in a year. We have the chance to do that this year with UGA and South Carolina.

My guess is one of the smaller schools like Troy or LA-Monroe might have played 2 top 10 SEC schools in a season.

Re: I can think of twice we came close

Aug 27, 2013, 10:59 AM

Yea that's true, but I wasn't counting them haha.

I guess I'm aiming more towards the "who has played them in an attempt to be competitive" rather than "we'll give you $500,000 to come to Baton Rouge to get your faces kicked in"

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Another fact for you....

Aug 26, 2013, 4:43 PM

In CMR's coaching era with FSU and UGA, he's faced CU 10 times. He's 10-0......

I thought the SEC was over rated?

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

the sec thought lsu would beat clemson.

Aug 26, 2013, 7:42 PM

two straight top-10 losses, to the hands of 1 team, (from the acc no less), is only the beginning of the end. yeah, it was just a little scheduling snafu, they will look to fix this, i am sure.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

This is because they never played anyone OOC with a pulse

Aug 26, 2013, 8:04 PM

until ESPN started setting up these big opening week games ~5 years ago.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Re: This is because they never played anyone OOC with a pulse

Aug 27, 2013, 11:03 AM

That's not true. Florida State has a history of playing Auburn in the early-mid 90s, we've got a rivalry with Georgia which was put on pause for awhile, and Alabama has regularly played teams like Penn St.

The irrational hatred towards the SEC here is getting to be a bit much. Yes, ESPN overhypes them, but this isn't some conference which ESPN babied into power. They became the most powerful conference and then ESPN has ridden that success.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

Not surprising. Do you know how rare it is for a team to

Aug 27, 2013, 11:17 AM

face two out of conference top ten teams, both from the same conference, on the schedule consecutively? Let alone winning both of those games. That has nothing to do with the SEC. It's super rare to even schedule like that, and if you do, then you have to face two top 10 teams and win both of them.
