Just watched the replay of the Dolphins double lateral

to beat the Patriots. I have often wondered, why aren't these type laterals used more often, and not just as a desperation, last gasp play? I know it's a little risky, but if you have watched rugby, they lateral it all over the field, all the time. It seems, with practice, this could be used more often, during the regular flow of the game.

You answered it. Too risky and rarely works. Also, the D is set up differently. The D was playing for a hail mary.

far away to attempt a Hail Mary pass. The Patriots should never have had Gronkowski, etc, in the game on that play - should have had their normal defense. Regular DBs would have caught those guys and that play never would have succeeded.
Gronk looked like an idiot trying to chase down the guy who scored.

The laterals obviously all have to be backwards, the defenders have a lot of opportunities to knock the ball down or intercept it, easy to be called for a block in the back, guys can drop the laterals...
It's a good thing to ponder but I'd wager that's why we don't see more of them.

We ran a buttonhook to the wideout and lateral to the rub all the time. Worked like a charm....back in the late 60’s????
