Some stats that that reflect the way Clemson plays.

Oct 29, 2018, 3:30 PM

I was curious about comparing our yardage and scoring vs yardage and scoring allowed per quarter using our 8 game sample size and just looking at numbers, not individual game situations.

Generally, it seems like we tend to start off slow, whether it's $cripted plays to feel an opponent out before adjusting, or just getting into the flow of the game. Because of the number of subs we use, and the fact that Dabo does not blatantly run up the score, we seem to take our foot off the gas a bit in the 4th quarter. The stats seem to bear this out.

Through 8 games, Our totals are

1st Quarter Average
Clemson 96 yards and 6.50 points
Opponent 42 yards and 1.13 points

2nd Quarter Average
Clemson 164 yards and 15.63 points
Opponent 55 yards and 1.89 points

3rd Quarter Average
Clemson 154 yards and 12.88 points
Opponent 76 yards and 2.88 points

4th Quarter Average
Clemson 108 yards and 9.13 points
Opponent 91 yards and 6.88 points

I've seen the question brought up about how we would do if we played our starters as much as some teams. It's totally unscientific, but if you use the 2nd and 3rd quarters and multiply by two, I think it's reasonable to assume that these numbers would be close.

Full game based on 2nd and 3rd quarter numbers
Clemson 636 yards and 57 points
Opponent 262 yards and 10 points

Keep in mind that our actual numbers are

Full Game Actual Average
Clemson 522 yards and 44 points
Opponent 264 yards and 13 points

Anyway, can't wait to see what we put on the 'ville this week.

Go Tigers!

Good job. These stats clearly show the adjustments that the coaching staff makes after watching the opponent for a quarter. It also shows some letdowns in the fourth quarter when the subs are in the lineup. But, the production is still better than the opponents. We all know it, the Tigers are as well coached as any team in college football. It will show Saturday too. No more fourth quarter scare from the Cards!
