How many of you were alive when.......

Sep 16, 2020, 6:49 PM

UGA won their National Championship FORTY YEARS AGO NOW?

To hear their faithful here in Atlanta, though, you'd SWEAR they won it just a few years ago. Is sad this week to hear them yet-again trot out Buck Belue and Herschel Walker to relive their "glory days" since they have to other glory days to talk about.

I just turned 65 - can't believe I was only 25 when they won their title!!

dominated the stats in the 1980 game in Athens. At one point we had 235 yards of offense to UGa's 54 yards, but we were losing 14-10. UGa's Scott Woerner had a 63 yard punt return for a TD, and he intercepted a pass in the end zone and returned it over 90 yards until Chuck McSwain ran him down at the three yard line.

UGa played #10 ND in the Sugar Bowl for the title. In today's playoff system, UGA would have not won the title.

I listened to the game and the only station carrying it in Alabama had the Dawg network. I remember Larry Munson saying late in the game “They’ve got all the yards and we’ve got all the points”. I think he spewed something about hunker down or some such nonsense when we were driving late.

Thumbs up for remembering Chuck McSwain's tackle. That and Donnell Woolford's running down Leroy Butler in the "puntrooskie" game are two of my favorite Clemson moments. Complete and selfless efforts in essentially lost causes.

I was a freshman at Clemson. MAN... has it been that long since UGA won a national championship? I do seem to recall them winning a few recruiting titles since then.

#16 Scott Woerner INT and Punt return. Minus those 2 plays

Sep 16, 2020, 8:16 PM

the Tigers win. Also I believe the Tigers were inside the UGA 20 yard line and failed to score on 4th down to end the game. I bet somebody here remembers. Didn’t Mike Gasque throw a pick on the last play? Homer Jordan got hurt.

Yep, Scott Woerner took over that game. Tigers had a chance to win that game, but didn't gt it done.

I was in Sanford Stadium that day. Had a lot of bourbon peeping over the hedges near the flag pole.

I was at Athens, sitting on those crappy, falling down end zone seats. I tried to warn the officials in the ugly red blazers, and they just waved me off. A pregnant lady fell, and I heard she sued 'em. Yeah, we should have won that one.

Absolutely alive and remember well that Herschel never scored in The Valley. Those were great years when we were finally good enough to compete with UGA since we played them every year. Too bad we can't play them now.

force. I still say we could have crushed their dreams that year before they ever got started. We had our chances in that 20-16 loss, just as they had theirs the next year when we won it all.

I still wish we played them every year. Unlike the Coots, beating the Dawgs actually took a strong effort year in and year out. They by far had our number until Saint Danniford came on the scene. Then, every game was a slobberknocker. (With apologies to ole JR.)
