well, when old folks like me were in school

Jan 5, 2020, 8:56 PM

99.9% of kids did not finish school early. They also didn’t “juice” are GPAs based on the difficulty of our courses or any other factors. If you had a 4.0 it’s because you made all A’s.

Seems like my kids take a lot of electives and have opportunities to get out of scholastic courses. When I was in school, the hours we had in school had a corresponding necessary class.

But that was back when I walked 3 miles to school uphill both ways in the snow.

We must have gone to the same school! My parents schooling only went up to 10 grade. Then off to college. My high school only offered 4 subjects a year. One subject at a time for 8 weeks straight. If you made a C or below you had to retake the course at the last 4 weeks of the year, otherwise you got to take a so called fun course of interest. I don't recall anyone failing a grade either. We all graduated, 100%. Charlie Bauman if you are on here you know what I am talking about! You were the legend on the Field house bulletin board after the infamous punch!

I’m 58. And we had 5 or 6 out of my senior class that actually graduated early. In fact we were just talking about one of them today.

military_donation.jpg flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

interesting

Jan 5, 2020, 9:30 PM

I’m a tad bit younger, and didn’t even know graduating early was a thing when I was in school

yeah...

Jan 5, 2020, 9:29 PM [ in reply to Re: How many here finished High school a semester early? ]

My high school football team was pretty good my senior year, we had at least 5 guys get D-1 football scholarships. None of them graduated early, not even another guy went to an Ivy League school.

It just didn’t happen back then.

Side note: Lakeland, where Bowman is from was in our district.

I did. Wasn't for a good reason though.

Did not start college early.

Re: How many here finished High school a semester early?

Jan 5, 2020, 11:50 PM

Many high schools have semester classes.

It sucks for academics and learning, but it increases the number of classes you can take during high school and gives low performing students a better chance of graduating because they can fail multiple classes and still have enough credits to graduate.

For example, you need to pass 4 classes of English but have 8 shots at it because of semester classes.

Any student that took a full course load would be able to graduate in the winter but no one cares except athletes.

There were a couple of people at my high school that "finished" high school at a community college or technical college, but it was mostly because of behavioral issues. I'd honestly say they were on the spectrum, but that wasn't a diagnosis at the time.

Well ... not me ... but .. to be truthful I wasn’t really recruited that hard out of high school ... probably due to the fact that I tipped the scales at barely 145 - that and the fact that I didn’t play football ... -<img border=">

If people were as good as their obituary - and products were as good as advertised - this would truly be a wonderful world !!

Re: How many here finished High school a semester early?

I wouldn’t want to leave school early to go to college. But these kids today are much more physically mature than when I was in school. They are training them harder earlier. Just not sure why colleges started pressuring them to early enroll. I guess leaving in 3 years means you have to replace them a year earlier.

I met JC Chalk at the beach (Bahamas with his buddies) the summer before he started and told him I was glad he finished high school that there wasn’t a reason to rush it.

I graduated in 09 and a lot of people i knew did graduate early but most did not go straight to college, just worked until they left for college. Maybe Bowman wasnt ready to leave and wanted to stay at home for another semester to enjoy his senior year.

flag link military_tech thumb_downthumb_up

I finished a semester and a half early!

Jan 6, 2020, 3:57 AM

Well dropped out/kicked out.

My oldest kid finished a semester early and got a jump start on college

It wasn't a 'thing' in my day

Jan 6, 2020, 5:43 AM

But given that college frosh classes look remarkably like senior high school classes, why not go for it if you can? That said, a lot of kids these days JET (I don't recall its meaning) where they take college course that count towards both HS and college. Me, I was just your run-of-the-mill vanilla high school student who somehow was accepted into Clemson! Miracles do happen! ;)

I don’t think it had a name

Jan 6, 2020, 6:26 AM

But I did that my senior year

PSYCH 101
Some kind of govt and Econ stuff

I started Clemson with basically a semester under my belt.

Took enough Spanish in high school to start Clemson at the sophomore level of Spanish

I didn't want out of high school.

Jan 6, 2020, 5:47 AM

I actually dropped out my Sr year so I could return the following year.

My daughter graduated high school a couple of years ago and fulfilled all the requirements to graduate by the end of her junior year, but we elected for her to continue high school through her senior year more for the experience than anything else. No need to rush life, it'll come to you soon enough.

I knew a couple of girls who graduated early so they could go off to college with older boyfriends. One of those relationships even lasted long enough for a "starter" marriage. I don't recommend that.

These days it really depends on the student and the high school. You can start taking high school classes in 8th grade, and take 8 classes a year if your school has a block schedule. My daughter will graduate with 32 of the required 24 credits, including three college credits. We know a number of kids who will graduate with associates degrees or up to ten college credits. And one girl who graduated early so she could go off to college with an older boyfriend. I still don't recommend that. They had broken up by September of their freshman year.

Re: How many here finished High school a semester early?

Jan 6, 2020, 7:46 AM

When I was in the early years (I think 5th grade), the teachers wanted me to skip the next grade, but since I was already one of the shortest kids in my class, my parents kept me in my class. Two years later that was not a problem, and I would have finished 1 year early. I still think my parents made the right choice, and I enjoyed my classmate friends for years. I've never really regretted that decision as I was not really a bookworm. College Chemistry humbled me. :)

I was totally irresponsible, lacked direction and about having a good time in the moment.

Probably not the best example and didn’t relate these stories to my kids until they were responsible adults in their late 20s.

finished too early...

Jan 6, 2020, 9:50 AM

got to 7th grade when I was 9 (1948), got put back a grade due to what would now be called ADHD, still finished HS and started LSU @ 16.

t'was a huge mistake.
