How many American Music Icons Are There?
Aug 16, 2018, 1:11 PM
|
|
Let's say in just the last 100 years. By icon, I guess you'd have to include the best of the best and people who made it critically as well as commercially. Also, you don't have to like their music to include them. I'd go with the following from oldest to youngest. I guess also, you could put someone like George Gershwin on there as he's not much older than Armstrong.
Louis Armstrong Frank Sinatra Hank Williams Miles Davis James Brown Elvis Bob Dylan Aretha Franklyn Barbara Streisand Michael Jackson
Who'd I miss?

be to define 'icon'. I'll say this much...FAR more people in the general population can probably hum a Willie Nelson tune before they can hum a Jerry Garcia tune. I think THAT would be a more true definition of icon.
To me personally, a list of American music icons would be long and comprehensive, and those that made the list would be equal. I'm not sure about a tiered approach...you're either an icon or you're not. Just because you and I listen to someone, or don't listen to someone, that doesn't really exclude them from their place in music history.

Jerry Garcia and The Dead.
That puts him in some rare air as far as touring bands.
Crap. I forgot the band that played at my wedding. Yikes. whew....Maurice Williams and the Zodiacs. Thank you Google. Half the church was hung over the next day, father-in-law leading the way.

But I'm a fan. Discounting his first independent release Down To Earth, his body of work through the next 7 records was excellent. He made the turn on his 9th record, Volcano, to a more formulaic pop sound that grabbed the masses by storm and that's what he's stuck with all the way to the bank. Coupled with his live performances, Buffett found the switch to the money machine. That said, props to him for being an absolute marketing genius. he's also an accomplished author, and I've probably read the bulk of his work, both fiction and non-fiction. He's actually quite good, and if you ever bother to read his autobiography A Pirate Looks At 50, you can see why I might have to include him on a list of celebrities I love to sit down and have a few beers with.
